After Rosilan married in 1965, Sherley followed her dream and accepted a position working in the offices of the Defense Attaches in the US embassies in Helsinki, Finland and Beirut, Lebanon. In 1972 she married Harry Bachtold and the couple made their home in California, first in Fresno then in South Lake Tahoe.

In 1999, Sherley moved to Pensacola to be close to her family. In Pensacola she enjoyed bowling, being a member of the PJC Seniors Club and a member of Olive Baptist Church. At the time of her death, she was a resident of Wesley Haven Villa assisted living facility.
