William "Bill" Smathers
1932 - 2013
Smathers, William "Bill", 80 of Milton, passed away on Friday, May 3, 2013.
He was born in Washington, DC to Vinson & Allie Smathers on June 10, 1932. Bill enlisted in the US Navy in 1949 and spent his career in Naval Aviation to retire as a Chief Petty Officer at Whiting Field in 1969. After his retirement from the Navy, Bill started his second career and his passion as a full-time flight instructor and pilot where he spent over 40 years mentoring and training people to fly as a leader in the local Aviation community.
He is survived by: his wife Jean, son Billy (Sharon), daughters Donna (Dave), and Susan (Wayne), Brothers: Ralph and Wayne, Grandchildren: Alyssa, Bryan, Marissa, Will, Grace and 5 stepchildren.
A local gathering to celebrate Bill's life will be held at a later date.
Memorial donations may be made in honor of William Smathers to Covenant Hospice of West Florida Hospital www.covenanthospice.org.
Lewis Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements.
