Maureen Ferguson went Home on May 13, 2013; her son was with her when she passed.
Verna Maureen Ferguson Gill, 90, was born July 14, 1922 in Gadsden, AL. She grew up in Fort Payne and Attalla, AL, graduating from Etowah High School in 1940. Not long after her graduation, she changed the spelling of her name, on her own, to "Maureen."
She met Bill Gill in Montgomery, AL, when she accompanied a friend, Hildred Ellis, to see Hildred's future husband, Gerald Naylor. Gerald and Bill were training to fly B-24 bombers at Maxwell Air Force Base during World War II. Maureen and Bill were married in Attalla, AL, at the First Baptist Church, on June 14, 1945.
After living in Durham, NC, Raleigh, NC, Charleston, SC, Nashville, TN, Birmingham, AL and Paducah, KY, where Bill had various positions with Sears, the family eventually settled in Pensacola, FL.
In Pensacola, the Gills were members of First Baptist Church, until 2005, when Rick moved his membership to East Brent Baptist Church, and Maureen moved her membership in 2006. She enjoyed the teaching of Manelle Shell, Oleta McCarty and Dr. Charles Clevenger, in Sunday School at First Baptist, and enjoyed watching televised First Baptist, East Brent Baptist and Olive Baptist worship services, as well as her favorite "Wheel of Fortune," "Gaither Homecoming" and "Lawrence Welk" shows.
She was also a former member of the Bouquet Garden Club for many years, winning many awards for daylilies and camellias.
She and Bill were strong supporters of the Pensacola High School chorus and "Voices."
She was preceded in passing by her husband, William Hester "Bill" Gill, former manager of Sears, Pensacola, in 1989; her parents, Verna Mae (Rhodes) and Richard Monroe Ferguson, of Attalla, AL; her mother and father-in-law, Mamie Clinton (Edwards) and Clarence Lee Gill, of Henderson, NC; a brother-in-law, Preston T. Phillips, of Gadsden, AL; a sister-in-law and her husband, Alma (Gill) and J.B. Pugh, of South Boston,VA; a sister-in-law and her husband, Ora Lee (Gill) and "Cleve" Harris, of Locust Grove, VA; a sister-in-law and her husband, Annie Shelton (Dunkley) and Allen Gill, of Henderson, NC; a sister-in-law and her husband, Lavina (Dudick) and James Gill, of Henderson, NC; a first-cousin, Frances Ann Watkins, of Birmingham, AL; and three nephews, Ronald "Ronnie" Ferguson, of Haines City, FL; Rodney Harris, of Providence, KY; and James "Jimmy" Gill, of Warsaw, KY.
She is survived by a son, William Richard "Rick" Gill, Pensacola; a sister, Mary Elizabeth (Ferguson) Phillips, Gadsden, AL and a brother, Richard Monroe Ferguson, Jr., Fort Payne, AL; a niece-in-law and gr. nephew, Debbie (Robinson) Ferguson and her son, Richard "Lance" Ferguson, Haines City, FL; a nephew and niece-in-law, Richard Phillips (Beverly Phillips), Birmingham, AL; a nephew, Preston "Tommy" Phillips, Jr., Bridgehampton, NY; a niece and nephew-in-law, Beth (George) Day, and gr.-nieces, Claire Day and Brooke Day, Gadsden, AL; a gr.-nephew, Lee Ferguson, his wife (Anne Mueller Ferguson) and gr.-gr.-nephews, their sons, Richard Ethan Ferguson, Caleb Tiger Ferguson and Noah Lukas Ferguson, Oberhaching, Germany; a gr.-nephew, David Ferguson, Washington, D.C.; a nephew and niece-in-law, Richard "Butch" Ferguson (Teresa Elliott Ferguson), Albertville; a gr.-niece and gr.-nephew-in-law, Kristy Ferguson Parker (John Watkins "Watt" Parker), and their children, gr.-gr.-nephew Max Parker and gr.-gr.-niece Kate Parker, of Arab, AL; a gr.-nephew, Curtis Mitchell, Jr., Clearwater, FL; a nephew, Allen Edwards Gill, Jr., of Henderson, NC, and gr.-nephew, Parker Gill, of Henderson, NC; a nephew, Brian Pugh, Prospect Hill, NC; Lee Pugh (Cheryl Daniel Pugh) and their daughter, a gr.-niece, Karla Pugh, South Boston, VA; and a niece, Cynthia Gwen Harris, Locust Grove, VA.
Maureen appreciated and Rick appreciates our many friends, whom we consider family, including members of East Brent Baptist Church and many members of First Baptist Church, Pensacola; employees, retirees and their spouses, of Sears, Roebuck; Bill Gill's business and community activities associates; residents of the Seville subdivision, Pensacola; employees of Koby's Hallmark; employees of Susan's Beauty Salon, especially Meredith Daniels and Carole Brown; the employees of The Drug Shop; the doctors, managers, technicians, receptionists and groomer at the Hillman Veterinary Clinic; Two Maids and a Mop, especially Diana, Lois, Nikki and Colleen; Concord Cleaners' 9th Avenue location; the staff at Covenant Hospice and the Sacred Heart Hospital employees; and several of the nurses and employees at Baptist Manor.
Thanks, too, to Drs. Paul Baroco, Bill Whibbs and Hillary Hultstrand.
Also appreciated are the managers, cashier, servers and other employees at The Coffee Cup; the Hilton Garden Inn Restaurant Sunday managers, hostesses and hosts, servers and bussers; the managers, servers and cashiers at the Golden Corral; the managers, servers, hostesses and bussers at Jerry's Cajun Café; the restaurant managers, servers, hostesses, hosts, bussers and cashiers, past and present, at The Gift Horse and Lambert's, in Foley, AL; the managers, cashiers and servers at the Marina Oyster Barn; and, until mid-2010, the hostesses, cashiers, the table bussers and most of the servers at the Cracker Barrel Restaurant; and all of the cooks and chefs at these restaurants. All of these, except those locations otherwise noted, are in Pensacola, FL, and those mentioned have always made and most still always make Rick feel at home and like family when he and his mother were guests and when he has been a diner.
Visitation will be held 5-7pm Thursday, May 16, 2013 at Harper-Morris Memorial Chapel.
Funeral Service will be held 10:00am Friday, May 17, 2013 at East Brent Baptist Church, Pensacola, FL with Dr. Dale Patterson officiating. Burial will follow at Bayview Memorial Park.
Pallbearers are Don Williams, Jerry Gordon, Josh Fulford, Allen Smith, Eddie Pitman and Ed Chadbourne.
Honorary pallbearers are Chris Alphin, Ed Holt, Elliott Dobelstein, Bill Whibbs, Jack Sutley, Charles Clevenger, the "Alabama" band, W.L.
