Tre Chipman, III-Jewett Obituary

Tre (Donald Arden)

Chipman, III -Jewett

1969-2013

Tre (Donald Arden) Chipman, III-Jewett, 43 of Pensacola passed away Wednesday, June 19, 2013.

Tre was born in Duluth, MN on September 20, 1969, and was adopted at the age of 2 months, and we are grateful to his birth mother for having given us this beautiful child. He attended the Episcopal Day School, and graduated from B. T. Washington High School, Class of 1987. Tre received his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Anthropology from the University of West Florida. He enjoyed working on computers, internet technology, software creations and website hosting. Tre is part owner of Iccelerant LLC. His hobbies were creating electronic games, writing and telling stories, costume partying, grade "B" Movie Fests, playing jokes on friends, collecting comic books, games, movies, science fiction, barbecuing, collecting and creating his own spices.

Tre Chipman was an exceptional loving and faithful friend and family member. He had friends from across the country, many of whom he met at Washington High School. He was generous in giving sandwichs and water to those on the streets of Chicago for 15 years. Tre leaves with wonderful memories of his humor and quick wittedness.

Tre is survived by his mom and dad, Ann and Grey Jewett, Pensacola; siblings, Lisa Martin, Pensacola, Phil Jewett, NC, Kristen Reeves, CA; aunts, Mary Schmick, Chicago, Robbin Childs, VA; cousins, Debbie and Scott Madlener, Chicago, and many other cousins from around our country. Nieces and nephews, Grey III, Katie, Mattea, Kristen, Ellora, Isabel, Marika, Stephanie, Heather, Jacob, Ryan, Bradley and Heather and Neal (who called Tre "Uncle Choo Choo").

Visitation will be held from 5:00pm until the Memorial Service at 6:00pm, Thursday, June 27, 2013 at Holy Cross Episcopal Church, 7979 N. 9th Ave., with Fr. Jeffery Jencks and Dr. Don Winslett officiating. A reception will follow in the Fellowship Hall.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Covenant Hospice, 5041 N. 12th Ave., Pensacola, FL 32504 or Holy Cross Episcopal Church, 7979 N 9th Ave., Pensacola, FL 32514.

Special thanks to all of the staff and volunteers at West Florida Covenant Hospice, Sacred Heart Palliative Care, Dr. Peter and Molly Delevett, Business Partner and friend Troy Hall and friend Chris Christian.

Along marina path in Gillson Park, Wilmette, IL. a memorial bench by Tre's family. I visited in 2018, sharing some photos of Tre's bench with a view of Wilmette Harbor and Baha'i Temple. Miss your laugh. Remembering sailing at the beach here with you, Tre. Fun memories of laughter and hijinks after I fell overboard! So very true ..creativity and humor was Tre's gifts.

I too knew Tre from the computer game that meant so much to so many people. Tre was not only a tremendously funny guy and a great writer, he was also a truly kind and generous soul, gracious to all around him. When I think of "Hero", I think of Tre. He is truly missed.

I will always remember Tre as Ascendant, the greatest hero of Paragon City and a wonderful friend. Your adventure here is over, but heroes never really die.

Somewhere out there in the aether is a hero, and that hero should look out because an ice-cream loving sparkly unicorn who used to live in a cardboard box in Kings Row will come looking for them one day! But until then, farewell and good journey my friend.

The last I saw Ascendant was when the lights went out in City of Heroes. Never knew Tre personally, but I read his fiction, played the missions he built, and enjoyed the roleplay and conversation we had.
You were there when the last light faded. I mourn your passing.

Ann and Grey,
We just learned last night of Tre's passing and are saddened by the news.
I remember when Tre and Lane met while working at Pizza Hut. Lane talked about the cute guy at the restaurant and soon they were dating, Lane was crazy about Tre. One night Tre was at our house and our son Kent, Tre, and Lane started sharing stories about working together at the restaurant. Tre was so funny, I thought for sure he would become a stand-up comedian. He did so many romantic and sweet gestures for Lane. I remember him placing flowers on her car in our driveway so she would find them in the morning. Another time he prepared an elaborate dinner which was served on the beach by one of his friends dressed as a waiter. Tre was smart, kind, and so humorous. We were happy that Lane found such a great guy to date. They went their separate ways, but rekindled their relationship in Chicago. The last time we were with Tre was when we spent one Thanksgiving with them in Chicago and as always he was still enjoyable company.

We know this is a huge loss for your entire family. Let us hope some day to be reunited and until then he will keep every one around him entertained.

I, like many others who have entries here, knew Tre only in passing, through the City of Heroes game. He was a unique and wonderful addition to the game and to the lives of all the players who encountered his characters. He made the game better and, in doing so, made our lives better.

Thank you, Tre. You'll be missed, hero.

I wasn't lucky enough to meet Tre in person, though we had discussed it a few times, but I have known him since 2004 through City of Heroes. He was in my "supergroup", which is basically a group of friends that plays the game together a lot. Tre was kind and generous, encouraging and thoughtful, and despite likely being the most well known player in the entire game, very humble and considerate.

Tre was so clever and funny, and always added so much to our conversations with his witty puns and one-liners. His stories and characters were wonderful, but his friendly and caring personality was always his best attribute.

He touched so many people's lives, and I'm proud to have been one of them.

Thanks, Big A, for being my friend.

We did not know each other well, but I enjoyed hanging out with Tre occasionally in Chicago, and online in City of Heroes. I always admired his creativity, positivity, humor, and caring. He would have been baffled, I'm sure, if I had ever told him that he was one of my personal heroes. He was on my short list of "Best People On This Planet" and he will be sorely missed.

How does one express sympathy to people he's never met, and likely never will? I think the volumes below have done a far better job than I ever could, so I'll keep this brief.

Tre was an inspiration to all of us, which is probably more people than any one of us could guess. His wit, his creativity, his humility, and his humanity will be missed, but know that the shared memory will always be loved.

Grey and Ann -
We only met Tre briefly when he was cat-sitting for you in the RV while you were cleaning up the rivers, and we recognized your RV. He was very friendly and from all his friends have written must have touched many hearts along the way. Know you will miss him but can take comfort that he is not suffering, and I know your strong faith will carry you through these rough days.
Unable to make it to his services but please know you are in our prayers.

I want to echo what Dallas Bloom posted. I never knew Tre personally, not even on-line, but he still touched my life through the City of Heroes game. For a long time, I didn't know a lot of the little things I ran into were inspired by a player, rather than being invented by one of the game's formal designers, and when I did find out, I was tickled. If I knew nothing else, I then knew that this was a person who was funny and innovative, and who put more of himself into that community than most. It's not much to know someone by, but I think it's a good way to know them, and it's certainly enough to make me sad at their passing. If that's the stamp he left on a video game, I can only imagine what he left with his family. You have my earnest condolences.

Michael (DH) Richardson

June 27, 2013

I never met Tre in person, but we met through his heroic alter ego of Ascendant in City of Heroes. His wit and humor were seemingly matched only by his compassion for his fellow man.

Tre may no longer be with us, but I can promise he'll never be forgotten by those who got to know him in the real world or the virtual world of Paragon City. I can only hope he's looking down on us now to see the impact he had on so many lives.

Rest in peace, my friend.

I still have the autograph Ascendant gave my character, and I don't intend to get rid of it. Just for you, Mr. Chipman, I will always smash evil.

June 26, 2013

I'm not sure how the outpouring of grief from so many people all over the globe – most of whom only knew Tre virtually - plays for non-gamers but I do hope that it brings some small comfort to his friends and family. For my part, I barely knew him at all but I can say that I greatly admired his wit and humor and his contribution to the City of Heroes community. It is very easy in an online situation to let whatever frustrations of the day you've had color your interactions with others but Tre was never like that. In our little corner of the MMO marketplace, he seemed to be determined to do nothing less than to make sure everyone had a good time. It may have been just a game but if more people adopted his attitude, the world would be a better place. It is surely a little dimmer now.

I can't stress enough how amazing it is that I and so many, many others took something positive away from merely encountering Tre's words in our little chat windows. If I have 1/100th of that impact at the end of my days, I should think that was a great life. I will always regret having not made more of an effort to get to know this amazing man better.

Tre was such a cool guy in-game. I was really happy to hear all the stories about him out of character and to know that my instincts were right about him: Just a humble, funny, inspiring dude who I felt safe approaching and talking to at any time, in spite of how popular he was.

He really was the celebrity that Paragon City deserved. Possibly the one it needed, too.

Llydia Yydr

June 26, 2013

As I reflect on encounters with Tre, known to me as Ascendant, I realize he influenced me in many ways.

His clever wit and good humor were iconic. But it was his intense short fiction, especially the piece "Season Of Hope" (even more applicable now), which first turned my casual attitude into a sincere desire to be a better person. Further interactions made me want to become, like him, a person who encouraged smiles even while being a force for good.

Building community. Being directly active in service. Promoting and participating in charity. These and more are the noble impacts his legacy had. Qualities and activities now ingrained in my life.

Condolences to all whose hearts trembled at the news of Tre's passing. Prayers that even as our eyes tear, our hearts will lighten upward with the abundant memories of his goodness.

I truly believe that Tre has, like the name of his alter ego Ascendant, ascended to a higher realm where he continues to smash evil and be a pal among the heroic ranks of those who have gone before.

Thank you for being a bright star of hope, my friend. May you ever be so.

There are so few people in the world that you can truly say where a good and positive force in this world, Tre was one of these. As he once said for my character, “If you can honestly say you were more enriched by a person's presence than diminished by their passing, they had a successful life.” By that metric, Tre had a life many, many times more successful than most people can imagine.

Kevin Miller

June 25, 2013

I only knew Tre online in City of Heroes as Ascendant. He was an inspiring person in game. He was a great leader, always helpful and embodied all it meant to be a hero. He taught me many things about how to be a better hero, not just in game but in life. The best part is he could always make you laugh. His famous phone booth conversations may have caught everyone's attention and tickled their funnybone, but it was the man behind the hero that inspired us all. I was honored to know him if even briefly, to stand and fight (in game) beside him on several occasions. His memory will live on in memorial in the hearts, minds and games to come.

To Ascendant from Manowar:
Your last posted words to the world well after the game was gone were still inspiring. To Ascendant I say - "Forever a Hero. One day we will follow your path beyond the rim, unafraid, because your light is there still leading the way."

He was kind and funny and embodied what I think of when I think of a Hero. From reading about him he embodied that in real life too. June 25, 2013

I am yet another member of the City Of Heroes video game community that enjoyed, appreciated and admired Tre's (Ascendant's) writing skills, hilarious wit and his kindness and friendliness that exuded from him in everything I ever saw him type.
I only ever interacted with him a handful of times, but his work in the community was legendary. When I finally did "meet" him in the game, he proved to be more friendly and kind than I'd imagined. It was clear why he was so loved. It wasn't just because of his written stories, it was because of the heart behind it all.

Anyway, I just wanted to offer my most sincere condolences to his family and his friends.
Our City Of Heroes community is a tightly knit one and we've all felt the loss of Tre. However, I know it cannot compare to what you all are experiencing.
I just wanted to share what he meant to so many of us.
His inspiration, and the golden standard that he set, lives on in our community and within all of us individually.

Thank you, Tre.

I knew Tre only through his reputation in the City of Heroes community. I wish I could have met him.

Dawn "Madalyn" Kraft

June 24, 2013

I first met Tre “Ascendant”, like so many others here, in City of Heroes, and was honored to be able to call him my character's best friend, and subsequently for me, the player became a very dear friend. We initially met in beta, developed a quick friendship and easy rapport. I knew then what an amazingly talented and funny man he was and was excited about a story idea he had of two best friends who became the ‘loves that got away'. It was our version of Peter Parker & Mary Jane Watson.

Over the span of more than eight years, the two of us concocted an incredible evolving storyline together, that today, along with the man who helped create it, remain some of my most fondest memories, and I feel truly blessed that both lasted from the day they launched the game, to the day they turned the lights out, and beyond.

I was only fortunate to have been able to meet him in person once when he came to San Diego for the comic convention. We spent several days hanging out, plotting new ideas and just having a great time, and ended the weekend with some other friends from CoH. I can't remember ever laughing so much. I can't honestly believe there had been a person there at that restaurant, that didn't walk away with the memories of what an amazing person he was and will always be.

When I was diagnosed with cancer in 2008 and had to take some time away from online to concentrate on my health, Tre was supportive, championing my spirit, and taking the time to call me, just to make me laugh. So how do thank someone for that? How do you say goodbye? How do you tell anyone what kind of amazing impact that person had on your life? How do you express what their friendship meant to you and how blessed and enriched your life feels, simply because they were apart of it?

I don't think you can.

You can only hope to live up to the examples they set before you of the kind of person you wish to be. The world could use more people like Tre. The world could use more people to stand up and make a difference for the things they believed in. We could all pay it forward.

To his parents, his family; My heart and my life has been blessed to have known the amazing person you shared with us, and it deeply aches for you. I have no words to express how deeply sorry I am for the loss you have to endure. It is very little comfort for you right now, especially when you are missing someone so much, but please know, that he touched a lot of people in such a short amount of time. He made such a huge impact on an entire community of thousands of people, and there is not one among us, who knew him, that will ever forget what a truly amazingly kind, inspirational, selfless, gifted and funny man you raised, and we were better for knowing him.

Thank you.

May you rest in peace my friend, you are flying with angels now.

It's funny how, sometimes, people you never met in "real life" can make an impact on you. Tre ("Ascendant") was one of those people. Always with a positive word for those who needed it. A rock in a community that was uncertain of its future.

I think that, in the grand scheme of things, if you touch someone's life in such a profound manner, as long as that is remembered, your spirit lives on through those acts.

I once read that if you spend all of your time worrying about dying, living won't be any fun. I am confident that dying was the last thing Tre ever worried about.

Fly Free, Ascendant.

Thank you, Tre. I am one of the many COH players you positively affected just by being the bright light that you were.

I was lucky enough to meet the celebrity that played such a pillar of the Virtue server community of City of Heroes at a meet and greet in Chicago. Awesome person and sad to hear of his passing. Godspeed Ascendant. /em Salute from Tarberetta.

My name is Warren Newsom. I played City of Heroes with Tre for eight years (he knew me as Heroid). Tre was a great person with a vast imagination and a wit that was sharp without being mean.

He told the most wonderful stories and he could make you laugh and make you cry, sometimes both at the same time. He had a regular following on the City of Heroes forums who read and loved the stories he wrote about his characters.

I've missed playing with him since the game shut down. I wish we had stayed more in touch, but we did exchange emails a few times. Back in May he said about our game, "I won't cry because it's over, I'll smile because it happened."

Tre touched a lot of lives, and when we think of him, we'll smile.

I never met Tre, but I did "overhear" a few of his conversations in City of Heroes. They always made me chuckle. He was one of the people who made the game unique. He will be missed and will always be remembered.

Tre I'm sure you're laughing at me as I try to figure out this simple task of leaving a message on this web page. Thank you for being a good friend for a long time. You inspired the idea of "providing music, anonymously" to our 9th grade seventh period science class, and you graciously walked me around Chicago and bought me pizza many years later. I think of you squinting and laughing, and really look forward to laughing with you again.

I only met Tre a couple of times, so I don't have much to add other than he was a very nice and funny man and the world is a slightly darker place without him.

I met Tre on City of Heroes, like so many others, and had the fortune to get to know him, the player. I also got to meet him in person several times, and was struck with how bright his smile was, and what a positive person he was. It's how I'll always remember him. My condolences to his family and friends. He will always live on in our hearts.

While I am sad that you are gone, I smile because of all the good things you done for the rest of the world. You inspired us all to be better heroes and better people.

And you will always be cooler than Statesman.

Your biggest fan,
Adventure Boy

Tre, thanks being my friend. When I think of you I think of you finding humor in almost all circumstances. I believe I'll get to see you again and really look forward to it. BTWc/o'87

My name is Amy but Tre knew me from City of Heroes as Luficia, with that blasted talking sword. He was an inspiration through the years and I'll never forget just how hopeful he was about everything. I'll never forget when I was playing the game when I saw the first phone call he did at a train station and had me laughing for hours. He was a joy and I wish I had got the chance to meet him in person to tell him just how wonderful of a man he was. Somewhere, out there, he's flying in Paragon City and meeting with old friends and family. Thank you for bringing such great memories, Tre. You will never be forgotten.

I never met Tre in person, however his participation and presence in the community of "City of Heroes" was inspiring. I can honestly say that the game was better for his being there.

To many, many people, he was a Hero. Our world is less for his passing. My deepest condolences to his friends and family.

To the family and friends of Tre,

May you find comfort in your memories and in the hope of a future soon without such loss, and tears, and pain. This our God has promised us.

RIP and Fly Free, Tre Chipman aka Ascendant, Hero of Paragon City. Your heroism and kindheartedness ingame was a reflection of the man you were out of it. Brian Childers aka Wulfen from 'City of Heroes'

I also knew Tre from the game City of Heroes. I know that in communities like this, a lot of people are what I call "random Internet strangers," but Tre was clearly much more than that to this community. He was by far one of the most well-known and respected members of our ranks, and we all will miss his personality and contributions dearly.

The spirit he embodied really is the reason that the people who played our game really are a community, not just a collection of strangers, why a game world became a very real place with people you very much care about.

I hope his close friends and family take solace in knowing how broad his influence is all across the world, knowing how many people knew and appreciated the positivity he added to it, and knowing that his memory will continue on.

I only knew him as a friendly face in the big city of Paragon, but he made everything so much brighter by being there.
