TELL CITY – Joan Marie Winchell, 82, passed away Monday, Nov. 11, 2013 at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville.
Joan was born in Chicago, Ill. on March 7, 1931 to the late Dennis Carroll and Mary Ann (Sutton) Cooley.
Joan Cooley was united in marriage on May 25, 1957, to Barney Y. Winchell, who precedes her in death. She was a dedicated member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church serving on the Women's Guild and choir. She has also served as church secretary and Sunday School Teacher.
Joan lived for family gatherings and communicated daily with her children and friends by daily emails. She never went a day without taking a long walk with her schnauzer companion Jocko. She took pride in her home of 50 years and her many flower gardens. Over the years also she worked with the Perry County Humane Society as she had a deep concern for the welfare of homeless pets. She also showed her love to her children and grandchildren by hand sewing quilts for each of them.
Surviving are her children, Mary Anne Machin (Jim) of Memphis, Tenn., Letha Diane "DeeDee" Gierow (Peter) of Kalmar, Sweden, Julie Ann Thurlow (Tom) of Carmel, Katherine Suzanne Fazio (Mike) of Santa Claus, Patricia Ann Case (Dan) of Saratoga Springs, N.Y., and Max Winchell (Jennifer) of Terre Haute; a sister, Carol Ann Chapman of Grandview; 13 grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. CST Saturday, Nov. 16, at Emmanuel Lutheran Church. Pastor Daniel Gadbaw will officiate. Burial will follow in Sunset Cemetery in Rockport. Visitation will be Friday from 3 to 8 p.m. at Zoercher-Gillick Funeral Home and Saturday at Emmanuel Lutheran Church from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m.
