TELL CITY – Charles (Sonny) Phillip Hubbs was born on Oct. 20, 1933, in Tell City, Ind. His parents were Charles T. Hubbs and Esther Strahl Hubbs. He passed away peacefully in his sleep on Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2018, at the home of Clay and Kimberley Hubbs in Parker, Colo. He was 84.
Charlie grew up in and around Tell City and was the oldest of 13 children. He obtained a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Evansville College. He married Carolyn Esther Boger also from Tell City on June 30, 1956. He adored his wife and never did quite fully recover from her passing in 2007.
Charlie began working as an engineer for General Electric in Owensboro, Ky. He became the manager of Quality Assurance and continued his career in Decatur, Ill., Boston, Mass., Bridgeport, Conn., and Philadelphia, Penn. Charlie then moved to Greeneville, Tenn., to manage Quality Assurance for Philips and eventually retired there. He moved back to Tell City in 2007.
Charlie traveled the world in his career but the most important thing to him was his family. Vacations were spent with his family at both the B-Hive cabin in Santa Claus and the Leopold cabin. He enjoyed fishing, telling stories and joking with friends. He was also an avid fan of college football, NASCAR, martinis and golf.
Charles is survived by his three sons, Charles (wife Stephanie), Craig, and Clay (wife Kimberley), his five grandchildren (Katharine, Charles, Hayden, Jordyn, Devyn) and his three great-grandchildren (Ellie, Abygail, Stephen Charles (Chip)). Brothers and sisters are, his sister Sue and her husband Bob Masterson (deceased), his brother William (Bill) and his wife Barbara, is brother Mark and his wife Jan, his sister Kitty and her husband Bill Farquhar, his sister Bea-Ann and her husband Ed Spahn, his sister Emily and her husband Bill Weddle (deceased), his sister Jane and her husband Jim Meek, his sister Vicky and her husband David Smith (deceased), his sister Linda and her husband Frank Anderson, his sister Annie and her husband Steve Fowler, his sister Meg and her husband Gary Boswell, and his sister Martina Hubbs (deceased).
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Oct. 13, at St Paul Catholic Church in Tell City. Mass will begin at 10 a.m. followed by a graveside burial in St. Mary Catholic Cemetery.
