Joetta Kay "Jody" Donovan, 69, of Martinsville died unexpectedly on Monday, Dec. 18, 2017. Jody was born on Monday, Aug. 16, 1948, in Huntingburg to the late Gilbert E. and Nellie M. (Schroeder) Racine.
She graduated from Tell City High School with the class of 1966, earning class salutatorian. After high school graduation, Jody attended Indiana University in Bloomington where she received her bachelors and masters degree in education, as well as, a second masters in instructional systems technology in 1997. While an undergraduate student at IU, Jody met the love of her life, the honorable R. Stephen Donovan. The two were married on Oct. 25, 1969, and he preceded her in death on March 15, 2009.
Jody began her teaching career in Indianapolis at school #22 in 1970. In 1977, she and Steve moved to Martinsville where she accepted a teaching position at Green Township Elementary School. Over the following 23 years, she taught second, third and fourth grades before eventually retiring after 30 years of teaching.
Jody's passion for learning coupled with her extreme curiosity, was the driving force behind her dedication to education, both personally and philanthropically. She was an avid reader. In the late 1980s, Jody was in the forefront of the Buddy Project, encouraging education and technology. She was also an advocate for adult literacy and spent countless hours volunteering and serving on the board for the Morgan County Coalition for Adult Literacy. Additionally, Jody was a member of the Toastmasters of Morgan County, as well as, the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Martinsville. Aside from learning and teaching, Jody also loved to travel, attend the theatre and above all, spend time with her grandchildren.
She leaves behind many dear friends and her loving family including her son and daughter-in-law, Matthew and Eunice Donovan of Bloomington; daughter, Stephanie Donovan of Indianapolis; sister, Beverly Racine of Cape Cod, Mass., and her beloved grandchildren, Keegan and Grace Donovan.
Family and friends are invited to visit on Wednesday, Dec. 20 from 6 – 8 p.m. and one hour prior to service on Thursday at Neal & Summers Funeral and Cremation Center. A service celebrating Jody's life will be on Thursday at the funeral home beginning at 2 p.m. and she will be laid to rest beside her late husband following in Nebo Memorial Park.
In honor of Jody's love for learning, her children have requested that memorial contributions be made in lieu of flowers to the Morgan County Coalition for Adult Literacy, c/o Neal & Summers, 110 E. Poston Road, Martinsville, IN 46151.
