Roma Lee Phelps, 78, passed away Tuesday, March 26, 2013, at her home, surrounded by family.
She was born in Perry County Aug. 2, 1934, daughter of the late Claude and Hettie (Malone) Brown. Also preceding her in death were her brothers, Drolus A. Brown, Leonard A. Brown, Estel E. Brown, Elmer L. Brown and Wayne G. Brown and sisters, Opal M. Collignon, Hazel G. Amos, Effie I. Rhodes, Volma J. Wolf, Helen M. Brown and Ruth L. Brown.
Early in her career, she had worked at General Electric in Tell City. She was also an accomplished seamstress, having worked at Bachrach's until her retirement in 1988.
Roma enjoyed her flower garden, playing cards, watching thoroughbreds at Ellis Park and boating. She was voted "sweetheart of the year" at Inland Yacht Club. Her most treasured moments were time spent with her family.
Surviving are her husband of 61 years, Bainbridge Phelps; her daughters, Brenda A. Phelps and Bridgette B. Martin (Jack), both of Evansville; a son, Brian R. Phelps (Nancy) of Evansville; her sister, Judy Cronin, Tell City; grandchildren Brian R. Phelps II, Chandler B. Meyer, Ashley Hailman and Jason Martin, all of Evansville and her great-grandchildren, Abigail Rose Phelps and Elijah James Pike.
Roma loved life and fought a valiant fight, battling cancers for 15 years. The family wishes to sincerely thank Dr. Ahmed and staff at Deaconess Oncology for their outstanding care, friendship and compassion.  Also, a heartfelt "thank you" to Deaconess Hospice for time spent with our family during this final journey.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 30, at Huber Funeral Home, Tell City Chapel, with burial in Lilly Dale Cemetery in Gatchel. Pastor Eddie Olberding will officiate.
Visitation will be from 2 until 7 p.m. Friday, March 29 and from 9 a.m. until service time Saturday.
