TELL CITY - Walter R. Hagedorn, 93, passed away Friday, Sept. 6, 2013 at home.
He was born in Tell City Nov. 17, 1919, to the late Herman and Elizabeth (Hermann) Hagedorn. A 1936 graduate of Tell City High School, he was World War II Navy veteran.
Walter was married Oct. 20, 1946 to Valentine Oko, who preceded him in death in 2007.
Walter was president and owner of H.H. Hagedorn Sons Inc., a timber and lumber business. He was elected to the city council in 1960 and served as mayor of Tell City for six terms from 1964-1988.
He was president of the Indiana Association of Cities and Towns from 1975-76. He served as second vice president in 1973-74 and first vice president in 1974-75. Walter earned the Russell G. Lloyd Distinguished Service Award in 1977. In 1985 Hagedorn earned the Tri-State Mayor of the Year Award from the Evansville Freedom Festival, where he was an honored guest.
In 1987 Hagedorn was honored by the Tell City Area Chamber of Commerce for his many accomplishments in public service as mayor of Tell City.
He was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Council 1172 and its Fourth Degree, V.F.W Post 2939 and American Legion Post 213. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and being with family.
Surviving are sons, Michael H. Hagedorn and Walter L. Hagedorn, both of Tell City; six grandchildren, Michael Garrett Hagedorn, Walter Ralph Hagedorn II, Stephen Cyril Hagedorn, Patrick Craig Hagedorn, Jennifer Meunier and Casey Elizabeth Spears; eight great-grandchildren; his brothers, James Hagedorn of Woodstock, N.Y., and Louis Hagedorn of London, Ky., and a sister, Jeanette Schaefer of Tell City.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife and siblings Ruth Weber, Marcella Cobler, Dorothy Hagedorn, Frances Ludwig, Anna Casey, Dennis, Leo and George "Cy" Hagedorn.
A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated Monday, Sept. 9, at St. Paul Catholic Church.
The Rev. Tom Richstatter OFM officiated. Burial followed in St. Mary's Cemetery, with military rites.
Zoercher-Gillick Funeral Home in Tell City was in charge of arrangements.
