Passed away in Petaluma on August 28, 2012 at the age of 89 years. Devoted husband for 69 years to Cleo Haynes of Petaluma. Loving father of Frank (Patty) Haynes and Kurt (Laine) Haynes, grandfather of Lindsay (Kylee), Miles, Kirsten and Keisha Haynes, Erin Kleinfeld and great-grandfather of Eliza Haynes all of Petaluma. Survived by several nieces and nephews.
Bill was born in Berkeley, CA to Mabel and Willis Haynes. He joined the US Army
during World War II
and was stationed at the Presidio. An accomplished dancer, he frequented the ballrooms of San Francisco and Oakland, where he met his wife Cleo, who shared his love of dancing. They were married in San Francisco and he went on to serve the rest of the war at Pearl Harbor. After the war they moved to Petaluma, where he enjoyed the Petaluma Leghorn football games. He continued to pursue his love of music and dancing, giving dance lessons as an avocation and performing in a barbershop quartet, the 'Roostairs'.
He worked as a meat cutter in many local markets over the years: Ascherman's, Purity, Sissa's, Food City, and Carl's Market. He loved his customers and was always ready with a tip about a particular cut of meat, the beauty of an aged steak or a preparation suggestion. He particularly enjoyed fishing, heading out many mornings before work to fish for steelhead at Walker Creek. Bill enjoyed camping, music, golf, and was an avid Giants and 49er fan. He was also a faithful fan of his adored grandchildren, attending countless baseball, soccer, basketball, and cheerleading events.
He was a member of the Nicasio Parlor Native Sons of the Golden West, Petaluma SIRS, Danish Brotherhood, and Petaluma Elks Club
A "Celebration of Bill's" life was held. Memorial contributions may be made to Petaluma Educational Foundation, 200 Douglas St., Petaluma, CA 94952. Family assisted by Parent-Sorensen Mortuary & Crematory, 763-4131
