The Guest Book is expired.

It is with sadness that this announcement is made. David Robert Luce, born August 3, 1944, in Berkeley, CA, passed away on October 13, 2012, in Chico, California.
Born into a pioneer family, on both his father's as well as his mother's side; he spent his early childhood in Berkeley, Sacramento, and Alexandria, VA. In 1957, his family moved to Petaluma, and except for his junior year in high school, when he lived in Anchorage, Alaska. He lived there until he graduated from Petaluma Senior High School in 1962. Dave went on to Santa Rosa Jr. College and then to Chico State University where he earned a BA, Secondary Teaching Credential, and M.A. in industrial education. He taught welding for many years at Napa High School and was also an R.O.P. instructor in Napa. He always had a strong work ethic, beginning with his first job delivering the S.F. Chronicle when he was eleven years old.
Dave loved teaching and spending time in the outdoors. When he retired, he moved to a 9,000 acre ranch where he was surrounded by the rural life that gave him so much pleasure. He was a World War II history buff, loved George Jones, having no less than three projects going on- of one kind or another, anything "froggie", and over the years, loved more than one pet rat. He had a fondness for words - the spoken word as well as the written word. He loved reading as well as writing and found himself writing a newspaper column on hunting and target shooting, and was published in professional journals. In addition, he started a monthly newspaper in the retirement community in Chico, where he spent the last three years of his life.
Dave was plagued with serious health problems over the past ten years that significantly compromised the quality of his life, yet he never complained. He remained fiercely independent. Those who knew him well will remember him for his perverse sense of humor, his keen intelligence, his sensitivity and his sentimental nature. He was a man of integrity and honesty who will be very much missed. He was cared for by his former wife, in his last three weeks, who was with him when he was finally overpowered by metastatic kidney cancer. Dave never feared dying but never gave up wanting to live.
He was predeceased by this father, David Leroy Luce, by his mother, Leslie Paloma Smith Luce, and by his beloved brother, Timmy.
He is survived by his former wife, Cynthia B. Luce of Napa, numerous nieces and nephews, an estranged brother, Stephen H. Luce, and special friend, Marilyn Morgan of Kansas.
At his request, no services are planned. Interment of cremains in the family plot in Redwood Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Guernville, CA. "Good night Joe's knife"
