89, passed away 7/19/14 in Petaluma in the home he designed and built in 1971. He came to Petaluma in 1960 when he and his brother Daniel O'Brien purchased the original A & W Drive In at the corner of East Washington and Wilson Streets. He continued to work in restaurant business at the Hickory Pit in San Rafael, the Spinnaker in Sausalito and Harvey's Resort Hotel at Lake Tahoe. He operated the Three Lions at the Holiday Inn in Santa Rosa from 1967 to 1976, developing local business, banquets and the bar business with several successful musical groups. In retirement he purchased, developed and sold property and operated a seasonal recreational vehicle park and salmon fishing camp in Lund, British Columbia for nine years.

He was born in Ellensburg, WA, and raised in Yakima, WA, and Hubbard, OR. Drafted during the Korean War, he then attended Portland State and Mexico City College and UCLA.
The son of the late Patrick and Adelaide O'Brien, he is survived by his wife of 51years, Joan Dado O'Brien, son, Timothy O'Brien, daughter Kerry Bostrom, son-in-law Wade Bostrom, granddaughters Anna and Grace Bostrom, all of Petaluma and brother Patrick O'Brien of Tigard, OR, five nieces and one nephew. He was predeceased by his brother Daniel O'Brien of Petaluma and sister Sister Gabriel O'Brien, ODC of Carmel.
Friends and family are invited to a Celebration of Life at the O'Brien home Saturday August 2, 2014, from 2 to 4 p.m. Donations to the Edwin Kelsey Foundation Scholarship, c/o Petaluma Educational Foundation, 200 Douglas Street, or Hospice of Petaluma, 416 Payran Street, both 94952 would be deeply appreciated by the family.
