I graduated from Temple in '81 and I remember that Dr. Schmuckler was the Mace Bearer. My father, Frederick, who also taught at Temple and passed in 2015, once told me that Dr. Schmuckler was a cousin. If anyone in the family knows how, please contact me Thanks.

What an indellible mark Dr. Schmuckler made on my life. I share now because he is often in my thoughts: when I look at at sidewalks in autumn where leaf tannins make their stains (I asked him this question once in a TU lecture hall), when he accidentally left the answer key to the spring semester final exam in my papers and I took it home unknowningly and had to call him and speak with Shirley at his home in PA. When he walked through the door, he said to Shirley, "I made a terrible mistake today", and she replied, "I know, she called me about it". (he commended me on my honesty and integrity in seeking him out and explaining the error--and ultimately exempt me from taking the test in the end--Thanks for the "A' on it, Dr. Joe!). I loved every moment I spent with him in the classroom, lab, office hours. I will continue to conjure memories about him to all in my life and stress the importance of BRAG FILES to all of my students. I loved his violin playing and pulling out Tom Lehrer records of parodies on the Element Chart, his references to his children as letters and numbers (I use his system as I have three daughters: D1, D2 and D3). Dr. S--You were a suburb human in this world and I know you are watching us and seeing your legacies in many many lives. Your light shines forever.

You are an unforgettable man. It was always a joy to come to your class. You never ceased to amaze me with all that you knew. I will always remember your smiling face and amazing spirit. I will miss you dearly.

I am sorry to know only now that Dr. Schmuckler left us.
I am Roberto, from Brazil, and I took my Master's in Science in Education (1976-1978) and he was my adviser.
I would like to keep in my mind his image of a very friendly and happy man. And a wonderful professor. As a foreign, not english speaker, he helped a lot when I first arrived in the U.S. and at Temple. I will never forget about that.
My best wishes to the family. He will be always alive in our minds.

Hello, My name is Wayne Jenkins. I was a graduate student in the Temple University Intern Teaching Program. I was fortunate to have Dr.Schmukler as a teacher and mentor. I recently retired after 31 years of teaching science thanks to his influence and guidance at Temple. The world was a better place when Dr. Joe Schmuckler was a part of it. I did write him a letter
before he passed and he responded. I am sorry for your loss

I'm so sorry that I didn't know you had left us, Joe. I was wondering why I didn't hear from you on my birthday last year, then this year. You were one of the most incredible people in the whole wide world and it was such a great honor to have known you for so many years. When I first met you, I was a naive young woman not knowing much beyond my home country, China, and wasn't so sure of my self worth. But you, with your kind and nurturing guidance, cheered me on with tremendous encouragement throughout the years. I cannot imagine a world without you in it. But if I believe anything about human spirit, I must believe that you are still cheering me on from afar with your encouraging words ringing in my ears whenever I need them. I will miss you so very much. Shirley, words cannot describe how sorry I am for your enormous loss. I hope you'll forgive me for not being there at your time of sorrow for this long. I wish I had known sooner..... Just know that you will be in my thoughts. I hope you'll find joy and strength in the beautiful memories that you and Joe shared. Take care.

To the Schmuckler Family I extend my deepest condolences. Having lost a brother a few years ago I know what it is like to lose a family member. Dr Schmuckler was a tremendous teacher at Haverford High. I had taken Chem I during the summer of my sophomore year, and he literally invented two subsequent years of Chemistry for me. He was a friend, mentor, advisor, and teacher. I remember his remarkable humor in teaching a complex subject. I will always have fond memories of him . He was one of a kind. May you all be blessed with his memories.
Sincerely,

Joe was more than "just" a colleague. From the time I came to Temple in 1969, he was mentor and, most of all, a friend. I'll miss him--his humor, his wit, and his knowledge. He touched many people and helped many become real teachers in eery sense of the word. He will be missed!!

To Lou and your family, I wish you the deepest sympathy and condolences on the passing of your father. It is quite clear that he had quite a positive and memorable impact on all that he touched. Our thoughts are with you.

Joe and I both joined the Temple University SciEd faculty two months apart in 1968. We immediately became close colleagues and shared much together as we sought to promote teacher professional development - Joe at the secondary level and I for elementary grade teachers. We remained in contact after I got caught in the '83 TU retrenchment (which Joe was fortunate to just miss).

I saw firsthand the tremendous impact Joe had over decades of exceptional teaching and service to the science education field. He inspired many and is fondly remembered, especially by those of us fortunate to have him as a close colleague.
My condolences on his passing - he is truly missed.

I appologize for a minor error: the publication I listed should be: Meetings abstract #638 Pharmacologist 1974;16(2):303

CORRECTED VERSION:

Dr. Schmuckler was an amazing teacher, advisor, and mentor who demonstrated that everyone could create good ideas or products - no matter how small and still make a difference. He helped me make chemistry relevant to my students by collaborating with Temple U Medical School's Pharmacology Dept to design an authentic science trial which involved the practical and beneficial use of guppies in developing anesthetic drugs. My students, as well as others from participating science teachers were blessed to have Dr. Schmuckler as their mentor, too, to be able to see their work published (Schmuckler, J.S., et al. Tertiary amyl alcohol dose response curves in Lebistes reticulatus Meetings abstract #638 Pharmacologist 1974;16(2):303), as well as presented at the Association of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics August 1974 annual meeting in Montreal, Canada. My framed, hand-made, needlepointed guppy hung proudly on his office wall. Dr. Schmuckler's extraordinary encouragement made me always try to go the extra mile. May he rest in peace.

Dear Family members

I was saddened to learn of the passing of a wonderful educator and a great man. I was impressed in the mid 1960s (when I was at HHS) that a PhD would stay at a high school to inspire young students. Dr.Schmuckler was one of the early supporters and a faculty adviser to WHHS-FM, the student run non-commercial broadcast station at Haverford High that continues to operate to this day. I will miss Dr. Schmuckler dearly.

To the Schmuckler family ,
I AM SO VERY SORRY TO HEAR OF THE LOSS OF OUR BELOVED HAVERFORD HIGH TEACHER. HE WAS AN INPORTANT INSPIRATION TO MANY OF US. I TOLD HIM AT OUR REUNION THAT HIS CONTAGIOUS ENTHUSIASM FOR AND ENJOYMENT OF SCIENTIFIC INQUIRY HELPED LAUNCH MY OWN CAREER IN GENETICS AND MEDICINE, WHICH WAS NOT BAD FOR A GIRL AT THAT TIME. WE'LL CONTINUE TO "PASS HIS BATON" BY TEACHING THE NEXT GENERATION. THE GOOD HE HAS DONE WILL LIVE LONG AFTER HIM.

Then, "Mr." Schmuckler was my 10th grade chemistry teacher at Haverford High. I've since gone on to almost 40 years as an ER physician and teacher of medicine. But, in all that time, there was only one "the greatest teacher I ever met", and that was Mr. Schmuckler. His knowledge, his ability to teach others that knowledge, and his rare ability to engage every student in the class were unsurpassed. Whenever I teach I hold him up as a standard for my work.
He had my deepest respect and I share in the sorrow of his passing. A contribution has been made to Hospice in his memory.

I did not have the privilege of having Dr.Schmuckler,as a teacher in high school. When I did get to know him,it wasn't unitl 4 years ago. I am currently pursuing a bachlors degree, at Drexel. At the time of our meeting, I was taking Chemistry. He gave me encouragement and was a source of inspiration. He touched my life and was a Hero to me and many other people.

Lou - Our deepest sympathy to you and your family during this difficult time. From your friends at the Network Information Center Columbus.

I took several classes from Joe and he chaired my doctoral oral exam. He was a great teacher and friend. At one time, I believe that the graduate Science Education program at Temple had 6 full time faculty and and 2 part time. We ranked as high as second in number of doctorates granted in science education. Many Pennsylvania science activities had Temple Grads as leaders/teachers while I was the science advisor for the PA Dept. of Ed. (NJ science advisor--Deborah Cook-- was also a temple grad) CESTA was headed by Wayne Ransom who was at Temple during my stay- he was riffed and went to Franklin Museum. His trainers were Bob Jesburg -- MSed from Temple and Bill Metz -- Ed. D. from Temple. My physical science institute used Bob and Bill as the main presenters. The Capital Area Institute for Math and Science began with the director and one of the trainers with Ed.D.s from Temple (Dave Bauman and Kathy Blouch). I could go on but all these people owe much to Joe.

I remember being at a regional meeting of the ACS. The meeting was at Penn and about 40 people were there -- including Joe. Deborah and I were part of the presentation and we asked all in the room whose careers had been touched by Joe to stand. About 30 people stood up! I was so impressed that it brought me to tears. There was a spontaneous ovation (standing by all) in respect for Joe and his impact on chemistry and science education.

Mrs. Schmuckler - We so enjoyed Dr. Schmuckler over all these many years, and we were so glad you both could visit us at my parents home in Devon prior to our 45th HHS reunion in 2008. We and thousands of his students from our years at HHS will truly miss him. A great loss for the community and to so many he truly influenced in their careers over all these 50 + years of teaching, including a second generation - my nephew at Temple.
