G. GREENE Obituary

GREENE
G. DAVIS JR., a long-time resident of West Mount Airy in Philadelphia, died on Sunday, September 2nd, 2012, at Keystone House hospice in Wyndmoor of prostate cancer. Born on March 22, 1931 in Philadelphia, he was a graduate of William Penn Charter School and received a BA from the University of Pennsylvania in 1953. After graduation he served for two years in the United States Navy, stationed in Japan. Upon discharge, he earned a MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He was a financial advisor with a wide range of clients including banks, pension funds, not for profits, high net worth individ-uals and Auditor General Robert P. Casey. In 1987, he was appointed State Treasurer of Pennsylvania by then Governor Casey to fill the unexpired term of the late R. Budd Dwyer. He brought innovative and imaginative concepts to the management of state finances, many of which garnered national acclaim. He represented the Governor on the Delaware River Port Authority, Philadelphia Region-al Port Authority, Fairmount Park Commission and the Pennsylvania State Employees Retirement System. After his term, he was appointed cabinet level advisor to the Governor and returned to his money management firm. He supported numerous civic organizations in Philadelphia. He held many leadership positions at his church, Summit Presbyterian in West Mount Airy.
Married 59 years to his wife, Ann Norcott Greene, he leaves three daughters, Leslie Greene (Bernard Cooper), Ellen Hannah (Michael Weaver), Sarah Strolle (Geoffrey Strolle) and a son, George Davis Greene III (Penka Slavova). Another daughter, Elizabeth Wiley, predeceased him. He also leaves 11 grandchildren; a sister, Margaret Haines of Macungie, Pennsylvania and a brother, Donald Greene (Gail Greene) of Wilmington DE.
A Memorial Service will be held at Summit Presbyterian Church on September 16, 2012 at 2 P.M. with Reverend Cheryl Pyrch presiding. Burial will be private. Contributions in his name may be made to the Wiley-Greene Fund of the Philadel-phia Foundation, Summit Presbyterian Church and the Abramson Clinic of the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.
