DONALD ARMSTRONG Obituary

ARMSTRONG

DONALD HART, 50, of Marshfield, MA, passed away from cancer March 30, 2013 in Helsinki, Finland.
A native of the Philadelphia area, Don was born to Lorraine L. and the late Donald G. Armstrong. Don attended Plymouth Whitemarsh High School ('1981). He began studies at Johnson State, VT, but left to enlist in the US Navy in 1983. He trained as a Naval Air crewman (Aviation Antisubmarine Warfare Officer) and as an Aviation Rescue Swimmer. He served in helicopter squadrons in the Persian Gulf and Norfolk, VA before his honorable discharge in 1987. In 1988, while attending Temple University, Don met his future wife, Anna-Elina Eerola, a Finnish medical student. They lived in the Philadelphia area while both completed their studies. Don received a BA in Architecture from Temple. His strong technical drafting ability, powerful spatial intelligence, led him into equipment planning for hospitals and food service facilities. In 2003, he opened his own firm, E-Quip Consultants.
The Armstrong family lived in Chestnut Hill for 10 years. In 2005, they moved to Helsinki to pursue their children's education. They moved back to the US and Marshfield, MA in 2008.
Don loved to cook and entertain family and friends; he was an exuberant host and an adventurous gastronome. He loved the outdoors, fishing, and time on the water. He was an avid trail bicyclist. His artistic talents, curiosity and interests were deep, wide-ranging and eclectic.
Don is survived by his wife, Anna-Elina, and his daughters Emma K. and Alexanna G., his mother, Lorraine L. Armstrong, sisters Lisa A. and Allison K. Armstrong, and niece Erin H. Sweeney. A private memorial Sunday, April 14.

Lisa and Family,
I am extremely saddened by this news. I just found out today, April 26th. Don was a true friend and co-worker. He always offered suggestions to me by improving my skills in the marketing world while employed at Francis Cauffman Architects in Philadelphia. I can't get over this at the moment!
Lisa and Don's family, my heart goes out to you with deepest sympathy. You are loved, and Don (an extremely kind-hearted individual) will truly be missed.

They say that one can eat out 365 days per year in New York City and it would take 20 years to hit every restaurant. The same is true regarding stories of the adventures I shared with Don. I could tell you one each day and you'd never hear them all.

Don was a major influence in my life, especially during our days together in the Navy, and for the many years that followed.

I miss him terribly but am comforted by the fact that his love and spirit live on in his family and in my heart.

Don was one of the very best... Aside from many of his great talents and willingness to live life to the fullest, he loved people, from all walks of life. I treasure many crazy stories and adventures with Don; however, my fondness memories with Don were the times we would visit an unknown neighborhood establishment. Whether we were in our own neck of the woods, Chestnut Hill, Bryn Mawr, our stops between PA to Norfolk VA, Ole City Philadelphia and all the Philly neighborhoods, even the homeless gentleman on the manhole; I admired how Don would lead me into a place filled with strangers and we always left saying goodbye to new friends. Don never judged folks, and had a gift on how to touch a person's heart. Don will always be the very best...werewolves of Bryn Mawr. Luv you buddy.

Don and the gang in Colorado...

Don...what can I say about Don...he was the eternal optimist. To Don, there was nothing that could not be done. No slope that could not be skied, no fish that could not be caught, no beer that did not deserve tasting and no Thanksgiving turkey carcass that was not destined to become soup, even if it had to travel from Colorado to Pennsylvania to achieve the task.

I will miss Don. I will miss his stories. I will miss his smile and laughter. I will miss the opportunity to have another beer with him to hear him tell me where to invest my money.

A quote that always strikes me at times like these is from a movie I am sure Don liked, Blade Runner. "The light that burns twice as bright, burns half as long". Don, you were a bright light, I just wish we could have bathed ourselves in it a little longer.

Godspeed my friend...
