Herman and my dad were classmates in high school. My dad and my mom, in different schools, were both first in their class and were in line for scholarships to Penn. Herman had his notes stolen, and my dad lent him his. Herman then graduated first in class and went to Penn with my mom. My dad went to Temple. They all got scholarships and went on to become M.D.s. Herman was always our sweetest best friend. He was wonderful for me and counseled my parents to send me to the very special Oak Lane Country Day school with his own kids. I had a great four years there. Later on, he helped my mother transition from being an endocrinologist, under the wing of the very top doctor at Penn, to a new path in psychiatry. She changed her career and her life and could use her wonderful heart and mind to help people and families more and more. We were so proud of her. We always saw Herman and his beautiful wife and kids as the years and decades went by. In their final years, both Herman and my mom lived in the Quadrangle, a great senior center on Darby Road in Havertown, down the road from where I had been living at the time. We could sit and have lunch with him and enjoy him as ever. When he died, we went to his funeral and saw his kids whom we had known since they were born. Herman was irreplaceable. One moment I remember was talking about my own childhood. I was a precocious reader and lived in books and was the only boy around Phila who was not a sports fan. Herman said I was jaw-droppingly brilliant. It was a gracious comment to me who had always needed to be separate. I'm so glad to remember him today and to praise him, who was always such a blessing to us and the world. God bless you and your family always, Herman Belmont. Thank you for being in my dad's neighborhood about a hundred years ago...

He was my dad's childhood friend and shaped all our lives. He helped my dad be a doctor, co-mentored my parents, our families were inseparable to the end. He saved and changed my life at least twice. The most wonderful person you would ever want.

Dr. Belmont demonstrated excellence in so
many rich and meaningful ways to so many of us. He repaired and educated legions.
His memory will live on and on.
