I only knew Dick for 6 months in 1969, when I had a student co-op job (my first job in my life) at Bell Telephone, at 1835 Arch Street. I worked with him, going out in a van on calls to fix tricky phone transmission problems. I was impressed by how well-read he was and how he was able to fix just about anything. Being 18 years old at the time I was astounded that he did not watch TV. I talked about the Smothers Brothers and Glen Campbell, and he had no idea who they were (and he didn't care!). He used his time and his brain on more important (and interesting) things. After all these years it only occurred to me now (2017) to Google his name to see what he had been doing since then, and I am sorry to hear of his passing 4 years ago. I just wanted to let the family know that in the short time I spent with Dick, riding around in the Bell Telephone fix-it van, he made a great impression on me and influenced my thinking about life, reading, and what in life is really important.
