SELMA MONES Obituary

MONES
SELMA JANET, of Bala Cynwyd, PA, died Wednesday May 29, 2013 at Lankanau Hospital, of a heart attack. Born in Philadelphia, PA in 1922, to Herman W., MD and Freda Ingbar Ostrum. She graduated from Girls High School and Temple University. In 1944 she married Dr. Jerome Mones, DDS, also of Phila., PA. After a brief teaching career, she had three children.
Selma's intellectual curiosity led her to study at the Barnes Foundation and the Buten Wedgwood Museum, both previously in Merion, PA. She was a volunteer guide at the Philadelphia Art Museum for over 35 years and co-founded a not-for-profit organization, called The Lively Arts, in the 1970s. In this role, Selma helped many Philadelphians enjoy the cultural events of the eastern seaboard and beyond. Selma also was helpful to the Main Line School Night, planning trips for their sponsorship. Mrs. Mones is survived by her son, Richard, MD and his wife Pamela; her daughter, Andrea; and three grandchildren, Nicole Montalto, Daniel Mones, and Benjamin O'Hara, and her brother Bernard Ostrum, MD of Atlantic City.
Her husband of 60 years, Jerome Mones, predeceased her in 2004. Funeral services will be private. The family suggests that any memorial contributions in Mrs. Mones' memory be made to Massachusetts General Hospital, 55 Fruit St., Boston, MA 02114, attn. Dr. Andrew Zhu, Director, Gastrointestinal Cancers Clinical Research, in memory of her daughter, Janis Mones Gillham. www.goldsteinsfuneral.com Published in the Philadelphia Inquirer & Philadelphia Daily News on 6/4/2013.
