JAMES OWEN M.D., of Media, passed away October 13, 2013 at the age of 75 at his home from complications of melanoma. Jim was born July 17, 1938 in Pittsburgh to Jim and Betty Finnegan. He attended Central Catholic High School, the University of Pittsburgh, LaSalle University and then graduated from the Hahne-mann University School of Medicine. From 1967 to 1968, during his surgical residency at the University of Pennsylvania, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served as a combat surgeon for the Third Marine Division in Vietnam. He was awarded a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart. He returned to the University of Pennsylvania and completed his residency in Cardiothoracic Surgery. He later received a Master's Degree in Health Administration from St. Joseph's University. Jim was a professor of surgery for over 40 years and was Chief of Surgery at the Medical College of Pennsylvania, St. Agnes Medical Center and the Crozer Chester Medical Center.
He was the author of In The Company of Marines: A Surgeon Remembers Vietnam in which he recounted the bravery of so many soldiers whose wounds he treated.
He is survived by his wife Linda; his brother Jack Finnegan (Virginia); his sister Elizabeth Ward (Jack); his sons Mark (Joanne), Matthew (Kathryn) and Martin; his daughters Maureen Edelson (Mark) and Caitlin; also survived by his 15 grand-children and his father-in-law Louis Pinola.
Visitation for friends and relatives will be at 9:30 A.M. at St. Mary Magdalen Church, 2400 North Providence Rd., Media with a 11:00 A.M. Mass to follow on Friday October 18, 2013. Interment afterwards will be at Saints Peter and Paul Cemetery, Springfield. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Jim's memory to the Melanoma Research Fund, Thomas Jefferson University, 1025 Walnut St. Suite 700, Philadelphia, PA 19107.
