DR. LEO BENJAMIN, JR., MD, "Ben", 65. Dr. Simmons lived in Kennett Square, PA and was raised in Williston, South Carolina. Died Saturday, March 6, 2010. Dr. Simmons was a military officer (CAPT, USN-ret) and general surgeon for more than 35 years. He graduated from The Citadel, received his medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina and was a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He held clinical and teaching posts both stateside and overseas, and served aboard numerous naval vessels. Dr. Simmons earned several military awards during his career including the Meritorious Service Medal and two Navy Commendation Medals. Upon retirement from the Navy, he served as staff surgeon at the VA Medical Center, Wilmington, Delaware. Survived by his beloved wife Susan (nee Johnston) Simmons; children Leo B. III and Elizabeth; parents Leo B. Sr. and Iris Brunjes Simmons; sisters Rebecca Weatherby and the late Virginia Behrens. Also survived by 3 grandchildren. Funeral Mass will be held 12 Noon Wednesday, March 10 at the VA Medical Center Chapel, 1601 Kirkwood Highway, Wilmington, DE 19805, where friends may call after 10 A.M. Interment will be Friday 11 A.M., March 12 in the Williston Cemetery, Williston, South Carolina. Contributions may be made in memory of Dr. Simmons to the Office of the Chaplain, VA Medical Center, 1601 Kirkwood Highway, Wilmington, DE 19805.
