Sylvia Jason Obituary

Sylvia Jason
Norfolk - Sylvia Rose Lazarus Jason, 79, of Norfolk, Virginia passed away in her sleep on Saturday, December 17, 2011. Sylvia Rose fought a courageous two year battle against cancer. She was comforted by her family during her last days.

She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Dr. Bernard Daniel Jason, three children: Joel David Jason and his wife Carol and their three sons, Adam, Aaron and Josh; Paula Flax Carl and her husband Randy and their five children, Scott, Lauren, and Katherine and Hannah and David Carl; Marcy Peck Mostofsky and her husband Michael and their children Ilana and Devorah.

Born in Atmore, Alabama and raised in Brewton, Sylvia received her degree from The University of Alabama. She began her career in education teaching young polio victims in a pilot program, at what is now known as St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. While in Memphis, she met Danny and they married a year later in Palm Beach, Florida.

They returned to Danny's hometown of Norfolk, but this southern belle from Brewton found big city life overwhelming, so they moved to Danville, Virginia where Danny opened an optometric practice and raised their children. Sylvia's interests were many: playing Mah Jongg, the temple Sisterhood, needle pointing and porcelain painting for family and friends, and keeping local shopkeepers in business! Danny and Sylvia retired to Norfolk in 2001 to be closer to family.
No matter the town, Sylvia Rose never met a stranger and was loved by all.

A funeral service will be held Monday, December 19, 2011 at 12 p.m. at the H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments Chapel, 1501 Colonial Avenue, Norfolk. A graveside service will follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery. Shiva will be held at Danny's and Sylvia's home in Norfolk beginning Monday evening at 6 p.m. Shiva will continue each day through Thursday: 1 p.m.-4 p.m. and nightly Minyan 6 p.m. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Jewish Family Service of Tidewater or charity of your choice.
