Askew, Dianne Rary - Portsmouth  
Dianne Rary Askew Portsmouth - Dianne Rary Askew, 73, passed away peacefully July 2, 2015. A native of Salisbury, NC, she was predeceased by her husband, Raymond Askew, Jr.; and sisters, Peggy Crane and Mickie McCarthy. She was a faithful member of Pinecrest Baptist Church and served as their church clerk for 44 years as well as financial secretary. Survivors include a daughter Amber Adele Jackson and husband Michael of Suffolk; son, Randall Lee Askew of Suffolk; two sisters, Jewell Wall and husband Arnold of Portsmouth and Gloria Earwood and husband John of Fairview, NC; and five grandchildren, Randy, Kasey, and Colby Askew, and Austin and Braydon Jackson. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, July 8, at 11 AM at Pinecrest Baptist Church by the Rev. Tom Potter. Burial will be in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel on Tuesday from 6-8 PM. Baker, Frances Emily - Virginia Beach  
Frances Emily Baker Virginia Beach - Frances E. Baker, 89, died peacefully in her sleep on Thursday, June 18, 2015. Frances was born on Staten Island, New York to Frank and Gerda Peters and was the oldest of their six children. Frances lived most of her life in the small community of Travis on Staten Island. She was an avid reader and loved to sew, crochet and work in her flower beds. She was devoted to her family and faithfully visited her parents where her brothers, sisters and their children gathered weekly for coffee klatches and family dinners. Frances was admired, respected and loved by all in her large family and upon the death of her mother was regarded as the matriarch of the Peters Clan. She moved with her husband to Virginia Beach in 2008 to be closer to their daughter and family. Frances was the devoted and steadfast wife of Edward E. Baker who was her best friend for 66 years until his death in June of 2011. She was the loving mother of five children and she leaves to cherish her memory three daughters, Denise Foster (George) of Virginia Beach, VA, Barbara O'Halloran Ochmann of Sun City, AZ, Leslie Bennett (Thomas) of Manasquan, NJ; two sons, Frank Baker (Karen) of Sunset Beach, NC and Edward Baker Jr. of South River, NJ. Frances was proud of her six grandchildren and their accomplishments and her seven great-grandchildren brought much joy to her final years. A memorial Mass will be held Saturday, July 18, at 11 a.m. at St Nicholas Catholic Church, Virginia Beach, VA. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the Mass. Brown, Jim - Va Beach  
Jim Brown VA Beach - Jimmie Dean Brown, 72, passed away at home on July 1, 2015. He was an avid card player and life-long golfer. Since retiring, he worked for Virginia Beach National Golf Course. Jim was preceded in death by his father, John L. Brown, Sr. and brother, David P. Brown. He is survived by his wife, Faye Luther Brown; his mother, Ruby Brown; daughter, Jeni Brown Kendall; son, Tom Brown and his wife, Laurie; grandchildren, Hunter, Hannah, Carson and Cody; brother, John Brown and wife, Becky; sister-in-law, Loretta Brown; life-long friends, Rusty and Donna Thousand; and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews. The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 pm on Sunday, July 5, 2015 at Rosewood Kellum Funeral Home. Graveside service will be held at 10:00 am on Monday at Rosewood Memorial Park. Chrisman, Dorothy S. - Norfolk  
Dorothy S. Chrisman Norfolk - Dorothy Smith Kight Chrisman, 86, died July 1, 2015. A native of Trenton, NC, she was predeceased by husbands, Alvah L. Kight and Charles E. Chrisman; parents, Allie DeWitt and Beadie Collins Smith; and son, Douglas Kight. She was the last of ten siblings. Dorothy was a retired executive secretary with the Navy Department, member of Wesley United Methodist Church, Little Creek Road in Norfolk, loved gardening and was an avid camper. Survivors include her son, Larry Kight and wife Gwen of Norfolk; two granddaughters, Lori Lamanna and Amy Johnson; six great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and a close friend, Jane R. Sperling. A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, July 7, at 2 PM in Olive Branch Cemetery by the Rev. Scott Beck. The family will receive friends at Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel on Monday from 6-8 PM. Clingenpeel, Joel - Virginia  
Joel Clingenpeel Virginia - Joel Samuel Clingenpeel, 103, of Farmville and formerly of Burkeville, Virginia, passed away Saturday, June 20, 2015. He was a son of the late Cornelius Jacob and Allie Flora Clingenpeel of Boones Mill Virginia. He was preceded in death by his wife of 69 years Mary Eleanor Moon Clingenpeel, a sister Edith Clingenpeel Brubaker, brothers, Marvin, Harry and Lloyd Clingenpeel. Surviving are his two sons: Conrad Moon Clingenpeel and wife JeanAnne of Lewiston, NY, his four children Tammy C. Cabellero and husband Donavan and children Lauren and Brendon, and Michael Clingenpeel and wife Debra and children, Heather, Courtney and Mallory, Sean Clingenpeel and wife Kate, his children, Nexis and Hannah and a deceased daughter, Heather Clingenpeel. Also surviving is his other son Dr. Joel Floyd Clingenpeel and wife Mary Clarke Kanipe Clingenpeel and their sons Clarke Floyd Clingenpeel and wife Erika and children, Natalia Eleanor and Taylor Samuel Clingenpeel of Franklin, TN, and Dr. Joel Martin Clingenpeel and wife Beth and daughters Ella and Nora of Chesapeake, VA. Mr. Clingenpeel was raised at Bush Run Dairy and Poultry Farm in rural Boones Mill, Virginia and graduated High School in Rocky Mount in 1930; he then graduated from VPI with a B.S. degree in Agriculture Education in 1934. His first job was teaching vocational agriculture at Hamilton High School in Cartersville, Virginia 1934-1940, then at Burkeville High School, Crewe High School and Nottoway High School, retiring in 1974 after 40 years of teaching. Mr. Clingenpeel was a man of high morals and was highly respected by his students, coworkers, friends and family. He was an active member of Barker Memorial Methodist Church and later Wards Chapel United Methodist Church serving as an Elder and Sunday School Superintendent for many years. With his wife Eleanor, he was an avid rose gardener and he won numerous blue ribbons for rose arrangements, at a time when mainly women competed in rose club flower arranging. He was a member of Burkeville Ruritan Club for 50 years. His nickname in the club was "Honey." In 1978 he was chosen as the Lions Club man of the year at the "This is your Life" program. When he realized that Sunset Hill Cemetery in Burkeville was in a serious state of disrepair he located family members of the deceased and received monies to place the cemetery in perpetual care. He then managed the care of Sunset Hill Cemetery for 15 years. The gates of Sunset Hill have his name inscrobed on them following a dedication 18 years ago to honor him and his tireless work for the cemetery. His other passion was woodworking. He made walnut chests and desks for all of his family members and self delivered them as far away as Tennessee in a homemade trailer he fashioned from the rear axle of a 1938 Ford truck. He loved teaching and was influential in encouraging many of his students to attend college. During WW II he ran a cannery in the basement of Burkeville High School for County residents to preserve food from their "Victory Gardens" He also managed a farm machinery repair class to help farmers repair their farming equipment. Joel had a wonderful long life and he treated every day with positivity and every person with kindness and respect. He never forgot to say "Thank you" for help he received in his later life. He took full advantage of all the opportunities that this earthly life had to offer. Graveside services will be conducted 10:00 A.M., Thursday, July 9th 2015 at Sunset Hill Cemetery in Burkeville. The family will receive friends at Brookview Lodge, his home for the past 10 years at the Woodland on Cobb St. in Farmville, following the service. In lieu of flowers memorial gifts may be made to Wards Chapel United Methodist Church Building Fund 7818 Namozine Rd., Crewe, VA 23930 or Franklin Baptist Church Organ Restoration Fund, 208 North High St., Franklin, VA 23851. Dickerson, Robert C. - Virginia Beach  
Robert C. Dickerson Virginia Beach - Robert Dickerson (Bob) of Virginia Beach passed away to be with his Lord on June 30, 2015. Bob was born in 1941 in Richmond Virginia, to the late Phyllis and John Dickerson. Bob graduated from Princess Anne High School in 1960. He enlisted in the Navy with an illustrious career and retired as a CWO-3 in 1980. Following his retirement he graduated from the University of West Florida with 2 Degrees. He then went on to retire after a career with PWC Norfolk. He was a member of Haygood United Methodist Church and life member of the Methodist men. He was also a member of the Bayside Chapter of the Lions Club. Bob greatly enjoyed golf and fishing. He will be remembered for his generous spirit and willingness to help and serve others. Bob is survived by his wife Pat of 51 years, daughter Michelle and son-in-law Jeff Harrington of VA Beach, son Greg Dickerson and daughter-in-law Debbie of Charlottesville VA, grandchildren Rachel, Gabby, Peyton Dickerson and Emmalee Harrington and a special family member Roy Gibbs. The memorial service will be held at at Haygood United Methodist Church on July 25, 2015 at 1:00 PM with reception to follow. In lieu of flowers please make memorial donations to Haygood United Methodist Church and or Haygood Preschool. A special thank you to DRs Williams & Alberico and especially to the Sentara Hospice nurses, aids and volunteers who helped take such good care of Bob during his illness. Leopoldo Dulay Virginia Beach - Leo passed away Jan.22, 2015 in Ft Myers,FL. He was predeceased by his parents Loreto and Consuelo, brother Cecil and first wife Margaret. He is survived by his wife Shirley Luna Dulay, two sisters Yolie Dulay, Delilah Williams, son Michael Leo and four grandchildren. A memorial mass to celebrate his life will be held at Holy Spirit Catholic Church 1396 Lynnhaven Pkwy July 8th 2015 at 6:15pm. A reception will follow in social hall.
