Thelma Madern Portsmouth - On June 18, 2016, Mrs. Thelma Hodges Madren, of Lafayette, LA went to be with our Lord. Mrs. Madren was born to William H. & Elsie C. Hodges on March 20, 1930 in Portsmouth, VA. She was a 1948 graduate of Wilson High School in Portsmouth, VA and worked for the Portsmouth Credit Union and at Portsmouth Social Services for many years. She married her husband of 46 years, Rev. James W. Madren on April 12, 1969. Mrs. Madren is survived by her husband Jim, her two sons, Mr. Mike Smith of Newport News, VA and Mr. Mark Smith of Kitty Hawk, NC and their daughter Mrs. Amy M. Baker (Bill) of Lafayette, LA, three Grandchildren, Mrs. Charlotte Baker Delgado (Robert) of Steilacoom, WA, Mr. James W. Baker, Jr. of Lafayette, LA and Ms. Erin Marie Smith of Chesapeake, VA. She was predeceased by her parents, her beloved Aunt Marjorie C. Snyder, her brother William H. Hodges, Jr. and her sister Audrey S. Laney. A Memorial service will be held at James River Community Church (formerly Mount Zion) 8909 Eclipse Dr. Suffolk, VA on Saturday July 2, 2016. Visitation is at 1pm and the Service, officiated by Rev. Claude Marshall, is at 2pm followed by a graveside service at Olive Branch Cemetery. Flowers may be delivered to the church Friday July 1, 1pm-4pm and memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association. Thelma Madern and her family were cared for and entrusted final arrangements to Louisiana Funeral Services & Crematory (337) 330-8006.

Mahone, James Garland - Norfolk  
James Garland Mahone Norfolk - Mr. James G. Mahone, 92, passed peacefully at home on Saturday, June 25th. He was surrounded by his wife, daughter and son. James sold tires at Sears for over 20 years before leaving to manage Tri City Tires. Later, before retiring, he worked as a Deputy High Constable for Norfolk. James is survived by Emma Grace, his beloved wife of 66 years, son James, Jr. of Miami and daughter Anita F. Sims of Norfolk, sister Elizabeth Hilliard of Burlington, 5 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. A viewing will be held at noon, July 1st at Aldersgate UMC Norfolk, with a service at 1:00pm. Burial will follow at Woodlawn with a reception back at the church. The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be sent in his name to Aldersgate UMC Norfolk. Minnis Jr., Jessie C. - Va Beach  
Jessie C. Minnis, Jr. Va Beach - Jessie Clifford Minnis, Jr., 77, passed away on June 27, 2016. Born in Cleveland, TN, he was the son of the late Jessie Clifford Minnis, Sr. and Gussie Guinn. He retired as a CWO4 from the U. S. Navy after 25 years of service. He also worked as a government contractor in Washington, D.C. He was a true handyman, and he could fix anything. He was a carpenter, engineer and mechanic. He was also a loving husband, father and grandfather and he will be missed by all who knew him. Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 57 years, Sue Minnis; children Deborah King, Steven Minnis (Toni) and Gregory Minnis; grandchildren, Steven, Justin and Katelyn; great grandson, Cameron; brother, Richard Harrison and sister-in-law, Peggy Thompkins. The family will receive friends at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Great Bridge Chapel on Thursday, June 30, 2016, from 7 to 9 p.m. A graveside service will be held at 12pm Friday, July 1, 2016, at Albert G. Dorothy M. Matthews Chesapeake - Dorothy Moore Matthews, 92, of Chesapeake passed away peacefully Friday, June 24, 2016. Mrs. Matthews was born in High Point, North Carolina and she was the daughter of the late Carl S. and Mary E. Moore. She was predeceased by her loving husband of 53 years, Billy Alvin Matthews. She enjoyed her bowling and bridge immensely. She was a graduate of Appalachian State. Mrs. Matthews is survived by her four children, Thomas S. Matthews (Debbie), Ginny M. Thomas (Michael), Mark D. Matthews (Melanie) and David L. Matthews (Charlene); grandchildren, Courtney Parziale (Joe), Carly Peary (Chris), Carrie Hynes, Melinda Helgren (Travis), Crystal Rhoads (Garrick), Julie Dunson (Brad), Kyle Matthews (Kristine) and Allison Matthews; great-grandchild, Isabella Parziale, Aidan Parziale, Evan Parziale, Marlina Hynes, Carson Hynes, Jake Peary, Elizabeth Peary, Avery Rhoads, Isla Rhoads, Vada Helgren and Ford Dunson; sisters, Kat Gentry, Mary Murphy and Exey Siceloff. The funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, June 30, 2016 at Oman Funeral Home, 653 Cedar Rd. Chesapeake, VA 23322. Interment will follow in Chesapeake Memorial Gardens. McGinley, William - Portsmouth  
William McGinley Portsmouth - William "Billy" McGinley, 70 went home to the Lord on June 23, 2016. Born to Voyce McGinley, Sr. and Lessie, he was predeceased by his parents and sister, Patricia McEwen. Billy leaves behind his brothers Voyce II and Raymond, Sr., sisters-in-law Judith and Deborah and nieces and nephews Voyce III, David, Heather and Raymond McGinley, Jr., Dawn Weatherbee and Ronald McEwen. Billy loved to share stories and advice. He was kindhearted and quick-witted. For years, he dressed as Santa and read "The Night Before Christmas" to his nieces and nephews on Dec. 24. Billy was a photographer, history buff and hero to hundreds of cats. Billy, we will miss your stories and laughter and cherish our memories of you. A memorial service will be held at Portsmouth Christian Church, 3150 Detroit St. on Monday, June 27 at 7 p.m.

McVicker, Bill - Norfolk  
Bill McVicker Norfolk - LCDR William "Bill" McVicker, USN (Retired) died in his home Monday the 20th of June. He is pre-deceased by his wife, and mother of his children, Sue Urey McVicker and his parents. Bill is survived by his 3 adult children, William, Alexandra and Andrew, and his wife, Kim. Bill proudly served his country for 26 years in the USN and 7 years in government service at PMRF Kauai. His career began enlisted in submarine service and ended as an officer in the F-14 flight community. After the events of 9-11, Bill returned to active service on a retiree recall. His dedication to serve his country was a lifelong passion. Emanuel Wiley Miller Jr. Virginia Beach - Emanuel Wiley Miller, Jr., of Virginia Beach, entered Eternal Life on June 23, 2016 at the age of 61 years. He was born on September 16, 1954 in Miami, Florida to Emanuel Wiley Miller, Sr. and Vernell (formerly Cooper) Griffin. He pursued a vocation as a Navy Communications Specialist, spending twenty-one years in service to his country. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister Rose Miller and brother Brian Griffin. Left to cherish Emanuel's memory are his beloved wife Carletta Lee Miller; daughter Angela Miller; daughter Lashea Miller; son Emanuel Miller and his wife Yvette; sister Teresa Randolph; grandchild Aiden M. Estrada; grandchild Briseis M. Estrada; grandchild Malia J. Miller; and Aunt Dorothy Sutton. Further survived by other relatives and friends. Visitation for Emanuel will be held on Friday, July 1, 2016 at Altmeyer Funeral Home (5792 Greenwich Rd. Virginia Beach) from 11:00 AM until time of Funeral Service at 12:00 PM.
