Prince, Anne Hannegan - Norfolk
Anne Hannegan Prince Norfolk - Anne Hannegan Prince, 79, died on Wednesday, June 24, 2015. She was born in Washington, DC, to the late RADM Edward "Ned" Allen Hannegan and Ruth Nebeker Hannegan. She grew up as the child of a Navy aviator, and lived in Arlington, Patuxent River, Trinidad, and the Panama Canal Zone. She was graduated from Washington-Lee High School in Arlington, Virginia, in 1953, and from the College of William and Mary in 1957, with an A.B. in Education. She taught elementary school in Williamsburg until she moved to Norfolk with her husband, and devoted herself to raising their six children. Before her younger children graduated from high school, she commenced her second round of formal education. She earned a Master of Arts degree in Humanities from Old Dominion University, and then a Master's in Pastoral Studies from Loyola New Orleans University, pursuing her passion for lifelong learning in two areas for which she held deep interest: religion and the humanities. Following this, it was her great joy to serve as an adjunct professor of Humanities at Hampton University, sharing the gifts of her study and experience with the next generation of learners. She loved and appreciated beauty wherever it might be found in art, literature (she was an avid reader), worship (she was involved in liturgical planning over many years), or the natural world. She was a member of the steering committee for the Weyanoke Wildlife Sanctuary. She served on the board of the Tidewater Literacy Council, and the diocesan pastoral council, under the leadership of Bishop Walter F. Sullivan. Recent developments required a move to assisted living, and while she treasured her two months at Harbor's Edge, she dearly missed her friends at Pembroke Towers. She was predeceased by her husband, William Taliaferro Prince, who died six months and nine days before her. She is survived by two brothers, Capt. Frank Nebeker Hannegan, (U.S.N. ret.) of San Diego, CA, and Edward Allen Hannegan, Jr. of Mooresville, NC. She is survived by six children, Sarah P. Pishko and husband Bernard, of Norfolk, Emily T. Prince, of Somerville, Massachusetts, William T. Prince, Jr. and wife Amy, of Virginia Beach, John H. Prince and wife Carrie, of Norfolk, Anne P. Thompson and husband Scott, of Dorset, Vermont, and Robert H. Prince and wife Cary, of McLean, Virginia. She is also survived by 15 grandchildren: Brian Pishko of The Hague, Netherlands, Laura Pishko of Richmond, Virginia, and Anne Pishko of Norfolk; Sydney Moreland, Carson Moreland, Charles Prince, and Hannah Prince, of Virginia Beach; William Prince and Matthew Prince, of Norfolk; Ned Thompson, May Thompson, George Thompson, and Beatrice Thompson of Dorset, Vermont; and Holly Prince and Henry Prince of McLean, Virginia. A joyful Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday, June 29, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Norfolk, by the Rev. James C. Griffin. Memorial donations may be made to the Soup Kitchen of Sacred Heart Church, the Scholarship Fund at Saint Patrick Catholic School, or any charity or your choice. H. D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk Chapel is handling arrangements. Online condolences may be offered to the family through www.hdoliver.com . She was as gracious leaving this world as she was living in it.
