Bailey Sr., Robert E. - Warrenton  
Robert E. Bailey, Sr. Portsmouth, Va./Warrenton, NC - Robert Earl Bailey, Sr., 75, passed away Tuesday, June 30, 2015. He was a native of Portsmouth, VA and was the son of the late Ruben and Maggie Bailey. He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Ridgeway, NC and was a former member of First Presbyterian Church in Portsmouth. He is survived by his loving wife, Sharon C. Bailey; a daughter, Candi Briley and husband Matthew; four sons, Robert E. Bailey, Jr. and wife Kelli, Tim Bailey, Ronny Bailey and Todd Bailey and wife Angel; sixteen grandchildren; and ten great grandchildren. A funeral service will be held 11 A.M. Friday, July 3, at Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel by Pastor Dean Herberts. Burial will follow in Olive Branch Cemetery. Baker, Frances Emily - Virginia Beach  
Frances Emily Baker Virginia Beach - Frances E. Baker, 89, died peacefully in her sleep on Thursday, June 18, 2015. Frances was born on Staten Island, New York to Frank and Gerda Peters and was the oldest of their six children. Frances lived most of her life in the small community of Travis on Staten Island. She was an avid reader and loved to sew, crochet and work in her flower beds. She was devoted to her family and faithfully visited her parents where her brothers, sisters and their children gathered weekly for coffee klatches and family dinners. Frances was admired, respected and loved by all in her large family and upon the death of her mother was regarded as the matriarch of the Peters Clan. She moved with her husband to Virginia Beach in 2008 to be closer to their daughter and family. Frances was the devoted and steadfast wife of Edward E. Baker who was her best friend for 66 years until his death in June of 2011. She was the loving mother of five children and she leaves to cherish her memory three daughters, Denise Foster (George) of Virginia Beach, VA, Barbara O'Halloran Ochmann of Sun City, AZ, Leslie Bennett (Thomas) of Manasquan, NJ; two sons, Frank Baker (Karen) of Sunset Beach, NC and Edward Baker Jr. of South River, NJ. Frances was proud of her six grandchildren and their accomplishments and her seven great-grandchildren brought much joy to her final years. A memorial Mass will be held Saturday, July 18, at 11 a.m. at St Nicholas Catholic Church, Virginia Beach, VA. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the Mass. Barley, William P. - Chesapeake  
William P. Barley Chesapeake - William "Bill" Preston Barley, 86, of the Deep Creek Community, went home to be with his Lord on June 30, 2015. Born in Buchanan, VA on January 24, 1929, he was preceded in death by his parents, Olin V. and Ann Camper Barley; and his wife of 64 years, Merle Culpepper Barley. Bill was a 1947 graduate of Harrisonburg High School and a 1951 graduate of Shenandoah Conservatory of Music. He was band director for 30 years in North Hampton County, the City of Hampton, and retired from the City of Portsmouth Schools. He was a long time member of Deep Creek Baptist Church, choir director there for several years, and a member of the Ed Cuthriell Bible Class. During school vacations and upon retirement, Bill worked the family farm on what is now known as Culpepper Landing. He is survived by two sons, William Vernon Barley and wife Sarah, and James Preston Barley; three grandsons, Preston Ross Barley and partner Andrea Quidley, Waylon Vernon Barley and wife Carrie, and James Brett Barley and wife Casey; two great-granddaughters, Laya and Malia; one great-grandson Masen, all of Buxton, NC on Hatteras Island; sister, Beverly Ann Cronebaugh and husband Charles of Apopka, FL; sister-in-law, Betty Sue Spencer and husband Harvey of Deep Creek; and several nieces and nephews. The family wishes to acknowledge Debbie and Paul Wing of Great Bridge, Mr. and Mrs. Gene Langley, Mr. and Mrs. Donnie Lankford, and Lorraine Davis of Deep Creek for their unwavering love, help and support. A special thank you to Kathleen O'Brien, our Godsent hospice nurse from Kindred at Home. Bill held his family as close as his faith and was a part-time resident of Avon and Buxton for over 40 years. He and Merle attended and supported the Cape Hatteras Baptist Church and were avid supporters and members of the Cape Hatteras High School Booster Club. They attended countless sporting events in which their grandchildren participated. He especially loved spending time with his family on the island. A funeral service will be held on Friday, July 3, at 12 noon at Deep Creek Baptist Church, 250 Mill Creek Pkwy., Chesapeake. Family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow at the Culpepper Family Cemetery, 3300 block of Old Mill Road, Chesapeake. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hope Haven Children's Home, 3000 North Landing Road, Virginia Beach, VA 23456. Barnes, Virgie - Chesapeake  
Virgie Barnes Chesapeake - Virgie Mae Barnes, 91, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, June 22, 2015. She was born in Suffolk, VA, January 14, 1924, the daughter of the late Novela Brown. She was predeceased by her husband Ernest "Ben" Barnes and brother Jessie Brown. She retired from Paterson Nutrition Project for the Elderly. She was an active member of Saint Luke Baptist Church in Paterson, NJ, before retiring and returning to Virginia. She leaves to cherish her memories are her daughter, Bettie Anderson, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends. A wake will be Sunday, June 28, 2015 from 5-7p.m. at Crocker Funeral Home, Inc. A Homegoing service will be held 11 a.m. Monday, June 29, 2015 at Antioch United Church of Christ, 900 Hull Avenue. Becker, Sandra Lynn - Chesapeake  
Sandra Lynn Becker Chesapeake - Sandra Lynn Becker, 68, a resident of Deep Creek, passed away on June 23, 2015. Born in Ketchikan, Alaska, she was the daughter of the late Walter and Marion Becker. She was a Librarian for the U.S. Navy and owner of Becker Rentals, LLC. She was a longtime member of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Portsmouth. Left to cherish her memory are a birth-daughter in North Carolina; brother, Wayne and wife Jeannie; aunt, Verna; nieces, Tanya and Anna; nephews, Matthew, Aaron and Andrew; and cousins, Evelyn, Kathy, Nancy, Douglas and Allan. Bess, Julian "Duke" - Suffolk  
Julian "Duke" Bess Suffolk - Julian Royce Bess "Duke" passed away Friday June 26th at his home in Suffolk, Va. He was 75 years old. He is predeceased by his father Ralph Clifton Bess, mother Jennie Donavan Bess and wife Mary R. Bess. He was the brother to Bernice, Pearl, Judy and Raymond .He leaves behind two sons: oldest son Phillip R. Bess, his wife Cindy R. Bess and sons Bryan P. Bess and Taylor R. Bess; and youngest son Christopher J. Bess, his wife Lori E. Bess, daughter Erin N. Bess and son Shane C. Bess. He was a retired marine electrician who had once proudly served as a member of the United States Air Force. He was also a member of First Baptist Church in Suffolk. Our Dad was a devoted husband to our Mom and loving father who taught us how to be loving fathers to our own children. That is the greatest gift he could have given us. Dad has shed his worn and broken body and is now in heaven with Christ. Finally free. He is truly loved and will be deeply missed. We love you Dad. A funeral service will be held Tuesday June 30, 2015 3 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Suffolk with a visitation at the church one hour prior and Rev. Thurman Hayes officiating. W. Garson Boothe, Jr. Norfolk - Winifred Garson Boothe, Jr., 49, passed away on June 27, 2015. Garson was born in Dunoon, Argyll, Scotland on July 9, 1966. He was preceded in death by his father, Winifred Garson Boothe, a sister Tammy Denise Boothe and a brother William Scott Boothe. Garson graduated from Booker T. Washington High School and loved his job as a brick mason at Top Notch Masonary Company where he worked for many years. Survivors include his mother, Hallie Louise Bowman Wykes; step-father Willam D. Wykes both of Virginia Beach, VA; a brother Dennis Ray Boothe of Chesapeake, VA; a step brother Brian Wykes of Richmond, VA and many aunts, uncles and cousins. A Celebration of Garson's Life will be held on Wednesday, July 1, 2015, 6:00 p.m. at Smith & Williams Funeral Home, Norview Chapel. The family will receive friends following the service. A graveside service will be held on Friday, July 3, 3:00 p.m. at Grandview Memory Gardens in Bluefield, VA. Chester B. Britt Jr. North Carolina - Chester Brantley Britt Jr., "Runt", 85, of Hatteras Island, died Sunday June, 28th, 2015 at his home. He was born in Durham, NC, to the late Chester Britt Sr. and Rosa Leslie Britt, and was the widow of the late Wanda Rosiello Britt. Chester retired from the Navy, ran a tackle shop (Island Tackle), was active in the Masons, Order of the Eastern Star, Beach Buggy Association, and Cape Hatteras Anglers Club. He was very involved with the children of the community. He is survived by his pride and joy, grandniece Tiffany (Chris) Bock, and great grandniece Kalynn Bock; brother, Bobby Britt and family, of Alabama; nieces, Rose (Gary) Weigel, and Belinda Taylor; nephews, John (Darlene) Ochs, Eddie (Juanita) Ochs, Jimmy (Deborah) Bigham; grandnieces, Cindie Bigham, Sarah Bigham, Samantha Taylor, and Rosa Taylor; great-grandniece, Hannah Bigham; great-grandnephew Kaiden Taylor; sister in law, Gina Ochs; and special friend Jo Holloman, and family. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, July 1st, 2015, at 1:00 pm at Cape Hatteras Baptist Church, with Reverend Russ Howard officiating. A visitation for family and friends will be on Tuesday, June 30, from 6:30pm to 8:30 pm, at the church. He will be entombed in the Roanoke Island Memory Garden mausoleum. In lieu of flowers and food, please make donations to the Cape Hatteras Booster Club, or Hatteras Island Education Foundation.
