Virginia Beach - Anita "Cookie" Sneed Merkel, 70, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 16, 2013. She was born April 2, 1943, in Greenport, New York to the late Everett Emith Sneed and Esther Adelaide Jones Sneed. She is also preceded in death by her brother, Michael Everett Sneed; and sister, Esther "Sue" Sneed Albury.
After beginning her Navy civilian career as a painting apprentice, Anita retired in 2000 from the Norfolk Family Housing organization. Known for her willingness to assist her colleagues and making an extra effort for service members, she positively impacted many Navy families during her career. She also served in the Army during the Vietnam War after graduating from Southwest Miami (Florida) High School.
Anita had a lifelong passion for photography and crafting, and was generous with both her time and talents, sharing photos and projects often with friends and family.
Anita will be missed dearly by her children, Arthur E. Merkel and wife Kimm Isgar-Merkel of Springfield, Va., Joseph M. Merkel of Edgewater, Md., and Yvonne A. Merkel and fiancée Daniel Black of Atlanta, Ga.; and four grandchildren: Hannah, Marissa, Mya and Aiden. Also left to cherish her memory are her two nephews, Jace E. Albury of Bonifay, Fla., and Wayne K. Albury, Jr. of Peru, Neb., along with her brother-in-law, Wayne K. Albury of Bonifay, Fla., and nieces, nephews and cousins. She also will be fondly remembered by the many dear friends and caregivers who offered such exceptional support and compassion during her battle with cancer.
A Celebration of Life service, officiated by Rev. Gayle Harris, will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 29, at the Norfolk Botanical Gardens (Rose Hall Room). Visitation will follow immediately after the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the or Sentara Hospice. Cremation Society of Virginia is handling the arrangements.
