Carlton B. Cobb
Chesapeake - Carlton Burnett Cobb passed away on January 7, 2013, at Churchland House. Carlton was the son of Laura Louise Smalley Cobb and Thomas Earl Cobb. He was born is Greenville, SC. In 1937, he moved from Shelby, NC to Norfolk, VA where he met his future wife, Bertha Vermell Sprinkle, who predeceased him. They were married on December 26, 1942, and had two children, Kenton L. Cobb and Janis Cobb Ewing, who survive him. He also has three grandchildren, Jeffrey T. Cobb, E. Johanna Cobb and Amy Ewing Byrum and four great-grandchildren, Camryn and Rylee Byrum and Cy and Selah Steele-Cobb.
Carlton served in United States Coast Guard during World War II
. He was stationed on the Eastern Shore for which he had an abiding fondness. Following the war, Carlton worked at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard for 34 years. He retired in 1977 and established a successful antique business with his wife.
Carlton loved sports and especially baseball. He was one of four founding managers in the Olive Branch League. He coached the Garrett's Pharmacy Indians for three seasons, and his team won two consecutive league championships. He later coached the Tidewater Feed & Seed team to a Babe Ruth League championship.
Carlton loved being around people as well as visiting and helping friends. He rarely went anywhere locally without recognizing people and being remembered. His presence will be greatly missed by his friends and family. The family wishes to thank special friends Mary and Megan Robertson and Don Wessing for their support, assistance and prayers through the years.
Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday in Loving Funeral Home by Pastor Gene Primm. Burial will follow in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens with miliatry honors. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the
