Claude E. Clendenon
Norfolk - Claude Eugene Clendenon, known as Gene, died on September 21, 2013. He was graduated from Granby High School, where he was a member of the band. He was later graduated from Michigan State University
where he was a member of the Delta Upsilon social fraternity. He was a supervisory computer specialist with NAVCOSSACT and Naval Computer and Telecommunications Area Master Station Atlantic where he supervised twenty five systems analysts and programmers before his retirement in December, 1994.
Gene played French horn in high school and college and especially enjoyed playing in the Virginia Symphony "play-along" sessions at local shopping malls.
As a retired Naval Reserve Captain, he was proud of the fact that he was designated a surface warfare officer. He received an Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (Cuba) while assigned to the USS Mount McKinley. Subsequently, his reserve unit, CINCLANT DET 106, received a meritorious unit commendation based on his input.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Kay, and by a daughter, Annie, of Lynchburg and husband Tim Miles, and by a son, Kerry, of Richmond and wife Nancy. He is also survived by four grandchildren: Walt and Ollie, age 15; Frances, age 11; and Rutledge, age 8. He was predeceased by his mother, Mildred Powell Clendenon, and father, Walter Fox Clendenon, and by a sister, Nancy Ruth Clendenon.
The family is grateful to Our Lady of Perpetual Help and Medi-Home Health and Hospice for many kindnesses during a difficult time.
