Mr. Cowen retired from the United States Navy
and was a veteran of World War II
, Korea and Vietnam. Following his retirement he was a supervisor with Arrowhead Building Materials. He was married to his wife,"Liz" for 65 years until her passing. He was a life time member of the NRA and believed in the 2nd Amendment. He loved to drown minnows, drink coffee, and sit in one spot for hours at what he called fishing. He would sit in the woods all day freezing, communing with nature, and taking a lot of naps, doing what he called deer hunting. He wasn't particularly successful at either one, but he bonded with his family and friends and that in itself is a good thing and big part of being in the great outdoors. He was a grill master in his own right. Cooking all meat 15 minutes a side until nice and tender like shoe leather. His family ate many hockey pucks. He was born and raised in a small town in Colorado and came from a large family. For a Halloween prank one year him and his buddies took a buckboard wagon apart and put it back together on top of the town bank. His sons helped him heat and cool the state of Va. by constantly opening the front door and the refrigerator door. His favorite phrase was" close the GD door!". He played cribbage and was known to whoop his niece, Karen on a regular basis. He was a quiet man in a family of loud people. He was fiercely loyal, honest, a man of great integrity, and he will sorely be missed by his entire family and friends. He lived a good and long life and In the end he told his sons, "I gotta go, I'm all used up." We'll miss him.
