Dorothy M. Barnes

Dorothy M. Barnes
Norfolk - Dorothy M. Barnes, 85, went to be with the Lord on Feb. 24, 2013.
She was a native of Oklahoma. She graduated from Ft. Towson High where she was Valedictorian of her class of 1946-47.
She came to Virginia in the 1950's to help her sister Mary raise her two sons, Terry L. Merrifield and Danny B. Merrifield after losing their father in a Naval aviation crash. Her courage, beauty and grace were incomparable.
Here she met and married her husband of 41 years, Raymond L. Barnes Jr. and raised two children of their own, Ronnie Lynn and Connie Ann.
She was an active member of the Norview Presbyterian Church volunteering her time and talent. She loved attending the nursery, Bible study, the women's circle groups and the 50+ club.
Her example of being a loyal and faithful servant was the tradition in which her marriage was based and her children were raised.
Left to cherish her memory are son, Ronnie L. Barnes of Yorktown, Va.; daughter, Connie A. Hiner and son in-law, Timothy J. Hiner of Rancho Cucamonga, Ca.; two grandchildren, Colin A. Barnes and Nicholas R. Barnes; sister, Dorsie Faye Nowland of Texas; brother, Raymond Fennell of Oklahoma; several nieces and nephews.
A visitation will be held on Friday, March 1, 2013 from 7:00 - 8:00 PM in Smith and Williams Funeral Home, Norfolk Chapel. A celebration of Dorothy's life will be held on Saturday, March 2, 2013, 2 p.m. in the funeral home officiated by Dr. Vernon Murray. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery.
