Edward R. Ullom Jr.
Chesapeake - Edward R. Ullom, Jr. ICC, USN (Retired), of Chesapeake, VA peacefully passed from this life on Monday, December 16, 2013, surrounded by his family and faithful pets. He was 84. He was born October 15, 1929 in Portsmouth, VA. He was predeceased by his parents, Edward Sr. and Josephine (Stromei), his beloved wife Carol Rea Ullom (Eason) and daughter Terry Lynn. He was a fiercely proud retired Navy man, who served our nation as a Sailor and a civil servant, working on the ships he loved for a total of 43 years. He was a Korean War
veteran and during his Navy career advanced to Chief Petty Officer in two different rates, Radarman and Interior Communications Electrician. Following his naval career he was an Electronics Technician for NAVSEACENLANT until his retirement. He was an avid reader, loved to travel, had a wry sense of humor, and was a self-taught historian with a keen memory and attention to detail. He loved his two dogs, Chief and Jack. He was a lifetime member of the VFW
, the American Legion, the Fleet Reserve Association, the Ocean View Democratic and Social Club, PETA, and the ASPCA.
He is survived by his son, Edward R. Ullom III (Leslie) of Virginia Beach; daughters, Sharon Eckhart of Portsmouth, Evelyn Birdwell of Chesapeake, and Ruthie Langston (Gary) of Isle of Wight; sister, Josephine Kapinos of Rochester, MN and brothers, Michael Ullom of Elizabeth City and Dominic Ullom of Chesapeake; grandchildren Joy Quinn, Kristy Birdwell, Nikki Webb (Hunter), Justin Birdwell, Gregory Ullom, Marissa Birdwell, Sonny Langston, Jeffrey Ullom, and 8 great-grandchildren.
The family would like to extend our sincere thanks and love to all of the doctors, nurses, aides and physical therapists who took care of our Dad for the past 6 months.
A wake will be held at Foster Funeral Home, 1926 High Street, Portsmouth, VA on Thursday, December 19 at 7 p.m. A Liturgy of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Friday, December 20, at the Church of St. Therese, 4137 Portsmouth Blvd, Chesapeake, VA.
