Hallis Dianne Smith
Virginia Beach - Hallis "Holly" Dianne Smith, 60, passed away on August 24, 2013 after a brief but courageous fight with cancer. Holly was a loving and compassionate wife, mother, and grandmother, a devoted sister, a friend beyond compare, and the teacher/mentor we could only hope for as kids. She was born in Grand Forks, North Dakota to the late Leroy (Skeets) Gaddie and June Cook Gaddie. Holly was an active member of St. John the Apostle Catholic Church serving both as a Lector and Minister of Holy Communion.
Holly's passion was teaching. As a World History and English high school teacher
at Bishop Sullivan Catholic High School, she not only taught the aforementioned subjects but mentored many students in all aspects of life. She served as the Forensics coach as well as Assistant Director and Costume Designer for many of the school's drama productions. She additionally moderated the school's Haiti club and accompanied students to that country for volunteer work in an orphanage during one spring break. "Miss" Smith, as commonly addressed by her students, was more than just a teacher and her students more than just her pupils.
Holly is preceded in death by a sister Marijo Jones. Survivors include her husband David, her children, Matthew, Kelly, and Ashleigh of Virginia Beach, her grandchildren, Ava and Liam, her brothers, David Gaddie (Barbara) of Duluth MN, Kevin Gaddie (Joan) of Fergus Falls, MN, her sisters, Gail Riley (Don) of Sun City West, AZ, Georgia Gregoire (Kent) of Moorhead, MN, and Jennifer Olson (Larry) of Arvilla, ND, a brother-in-law Jeff Jones of Riverton, NJ, and numerous nieces and nephews.
