Portsmouth - Helen Marie Smith, 90, passed away peacefully in her home on October 7, 2012. She was born in Ossining, New York on February 6, 1922 to Jerome and Anna Zeck. She grew up in Peekskill, NY where she attended Hendrick Hudson High School. After high school she worked in New York City and volunteered in the war effort during WWII. Helen married her loving sweetheart Arthur H. Smith on June 25, 1945 and enjoyed the Navy life of travelling the world with him and their daughter April. In the sixties the US Navy brought them to Norfolk. She became a computer systems analyst at the Norfolk Naval Station. After retirement, they moved to Admiral's Landing where their friends were many. Helen prided herself, on her Irish-Italian heritage, which gave her a flare for cooking and a love for a party. She was amazingly creative and could craft fun and a positive spirit around any situation. Helen leaves behind to celebrate her wonderful life her loving daughter April Tynch and her husband David. Her pride and joy have been her grandson David Tynch, her granddaughters Ashley Tynch and Alisa Tynch Smith and her husband Ryan, and her great-grandchildren, Peyton, Lyla, Maxwell, TY, Travis and Julia. They brought many a smile to her face. Helen is also survived by her sister June Levy , sister-in-law Nancy Casparian and her husband Aram, her brother-in-law Ralph Smith, and her in-law Inez Tynch as well as many nieces , nephews, her cat Kitty, and loved friends. Helen's family was her treasure, her friends were her joy and her faith was her strength.
Helen's family wishes to thank all the doctors and staff at Cancer Specialists of Tidewater Medical Oncology and Hematology, her dedicated caregivers and ComfortCare Home Health and Hospice of Chesapeake Regional Medical Center.
Helen was a member of St. Paul's Catholic Church. A Christian funeral liturgy will be conducted at St. Paul's Catholic Church, 518 High Street in Portsmouth at 11 a.m. Wednesday October 10th by Father Christopher Hess. A reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Eastern State Hospital (Attn: Helen Smith Memorial, 4601 Ironbound Road, Williamsburg, VA 23188), the Portsmouth Humane Society(4022 Seabird Court, Portsmouth, VA 23701) or the (Attn: Donor Services, PO Box 650309, Dallas, TX 75265-0309) Snellings Funeral Home Churchland is handling arrangements.
