Hunter Lee Daugherty, father, brother, husband, friend and architect, died Sunday, February 24, 2013, at the age of 52.
After graduating from Maury High School and attending ODU and TCC, Hunter worked at Hopkins Lures in Norfolk and as a surveyor.
He discovered his profession as an architectural intern with Spigel, Herman & Chapman of Norfolk. He completed his apprenticeship with The Yates Group in Portsmouth, received his professional registration and established his architectural firm, Daugherty and Associates, in downtown Norfolk in 2000. The Tidewater area is peppered with his firm's commercial, office, residential, retail and church design work.
Hunter served on the board of AIA Hampton Roads, the Portsmouth Downtown Design Review Committee, the Portsmouth Building Code Board of Appeals and as an architectural consultant to the Hampton Roads Habitat for Humanity.
He will be remembered for his engaging curiosity, his wry humor, his plainspoken assertiveness - and a league of friends spanning every ilk, temperament, persuasion, and pedigree. Hunter was a generous and forthright friend. He loved sailing, yard sale-ing, woodworking, and fishing in Hatteras.
As the youngest child of the late Virginia Winters "Winnie" and Lucius "Lu" Adams Daugherty of Norfolk, Hunter is survived by his wife Vicki Battaglia; daughters Emily Rose Daugherty and Claire Winters Daugherty; siblings Bruce Schnable and her husband Jim, Roger Daugherty and his wife Karen, Barbara Bowden and her husband Ernie, and Robert Daugherty and his wife Lisa; many nieces and nephews; and a family of well-nourished cats.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, March 3rd at 2 PM at Hollomon-Brown, 1457 Independence Blvd, Virginia Beach. Burial will take place at 10 AM on Saturday, April 13th at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Norfolk, immediately followed by a weekend in Hatteras to celebrate his life. All are welcome.
