James A. Atkinson

Virginia Beach - James Arnold Atkinson, 79, entered into eternal rest on Thursday, February 20, 2014. He was surrounded by loved ones. James was born in Wilson County, North Carolina. He left Wilson to join the United States Navy where he served for 20 years. After his retirement from the U.S. Navy, James continued his career as a civil servant. He served as Chief of Police at the Craney Island Military Base and later as a physical security specialist on the Norfolk Naval Base. In his youth, James accepted Christ in his life and joined Rocky Branch Christian Church in Kenly, North Carolina. He later became a member of First Calvary Baptist Church where he remained a member until he entered into eternal rest. James was a kind, generous and thoughtful man known for his willingness to help anyone and for his love of family and friends. He was predeceased by his grandson, Jamari Waylyn Atkinson. James is survived by his wife of 57 years, Mary Whitley Atkinson; one daughter, Michele Atkinson; one son, Wayne Atkinson (Kathryn); five grandchildren, Monique Jones (McKinley), Wayne Moore, Maricia Atkinson, Dana Atkinson and Christopher Atkinson; three great grandchildren; one sister Thelma Pinkney and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. A celebration of James' life will be held, 11 a.m., Monday, February 24, at Metropolitan Funeral Service, 120 West Berkley Ave Norfolk, Virginia.
