Joanne B. Young(1922 - 2014)

Joanne B. Young

Norfolk - After an all-too-brief 91 years, Joanne's strong, sweet spirit has left this world and skipped merrily through Glory's gates.

Eleanor Joanne Boeshaar Young was born September 27, 1922 to Eleanor Abbie Kerr Boeshaar and Kenna Jacob Boeshaar, in Columbus, Ohio. Joanne's happy childhood was spent in the neighborhood of Bexley, Ohio.

Joanne knew from a very young age that she wanted to be a writer. Her first efforts came during grade school. Her earliest publication came during her teen years, first with local newspapers and then in national publications. She had a heart for children and taught Sunday school for over forty-five years, at Christ United Methodist Church. She had a great love for birds, dogs, cats, and other critters.

Joanne was a staunch supporter of liberal causes, having developed a keen sense of justice from an early age. Though a loving wife and dedicated mother to her three sons, Bob, Randy, and Mark, she also accomplished a very successful career as a writer, from her earliest jobs writing cards for Hallmark Cards, then contributing to newspapers across the U.S., including The Ledger-Star in Norfolk, VA, and to magazines such as Family Circle, Colonial Homes, and Better Homes & Gardens. In her career, she interviewed King Hussein and Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt. She authored 15 books. Her final book, Searching for The Franklin Expedition, won the John Lyman Book Award in 1998.

Joanne continued to be active with her church and family well after her retirement date. Celebrating Joanne's life and her memory are her three sons; Bob Young & wife Janet, Randy Young & wife Sharon, and Mark Young & wife Esther; her eleven grandchildren (including those who became family through marriage), Geannine O'Brien, Caroline Schaffer, James Neal, Ryan Young, Jen Cummings, Kris Ebeling, Joshua Young, Kelli Haetinger, Kaitlin Ayres, Kristy Young, and Ryan O'Bey; great grandchildren, Danielle Skinner, Kaylee Adams, Bryce Schaffer, Chase Schaffer, Allie O'Brien, Andy O'Brien, Caden O'Bey, "Drew" Ayres, and Lily Haetinger.

Family and friends are encouraged to post notes about their memories of Joanne to be shared with her family at www.hollomon-brown.com. The family requests that any donations made in lieu of flowers be sent in her name to Christ United Methodist Church, 1601 East Bayview Blvd., Norfolk, Va. 23503.

The family will receive friends from 7-8 pm on Friday, March 14, 2014 at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel. The Funeral service will be held at Christ United Methodist Church, on Saturday at 2 p.m. with burial following at Forest Lawn Cemetery.
