John Edwin Woodward, Jr.
Sarasota, FL - John Edwin Woodward, Jr., "Jack", age 92, died January 7, 2013 in Sarasota, Florida. He was predeceased by his father, John Edwin Woodward, Sr. and his mother, Anna Dickenson Woodward. He was also predeceased by his brother, Dr. Walter Dickenson Woodward. He received his education in Richmond, Virginia at St. Christopher's School, Class of 1938 and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering from Virginia Military Institute, Class of 1942. He spent 4 years in the Army during World War II mostly in the South Pacific. On returning to civilian life in Richmond in 1946, he joined his father in the John E. Woodward Insurance Agency until his retirement in the early 1980's.
He is survived by three children in Richmond, Virginia, Elizabeth Noell Woodward, Carol Dickenson Woodward and John Edwin Woodward, III and two grandchildren, Annabelle Noell Woodward and John Edwin Woodward, IV. Loving sports and people, he was a life member of the Country Club of Virginia and The Commonwealth Club of Richmond as well as until recently a long term member of the Princess Anne Country Club in Virginia Beach and a former member of the Fishing Bay Yacht Club. He had many interests as he loved playing golf with his friends (often shooting his age), playing tennis well into his 80's, sailing up until his 60's, and studying nutrition and health foods for some thirty years.
In 1987 he moved to Sarasota, Florida where he became very interested in the great old circus performer displays at the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art. He made many friends over the years in Sarasota, Florida, Virginia Beach, Virginia and, of course, his original home in Richmond, Virginia. A true southern gentleman, he will be greatly missed by all.
He will be cremated and buried in the family plot along with memorial services in Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond, Virginia at a later date to be determined. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to any
