John L. Lovering Sr.

Virginia Beach - ICO John L Lovering Sr. went to be with the Lord on 1 November, 2013 at the age of 87.

John was the son of Walter and Annie Lovering and grew up one of six siblings in Somerville, Massachusetts. World War II came and he enlisted at 18 to join the fleet as a Naval Air Crewman and Radio Gunner. He met his life's love, Elizabeth Lewis, while stationed in Newport Rhode Island, and the two married in 1949. Returning to Boston after the Navy, John attended Northeastern University School of Law, was president of Lovering Bros, Inc. owning several gas stations, and was active in veteran's organizations. He then joined Massachusetts Civil Defense Agency, worked in various regional director positions for more than thirty years, and served as State Deputy Director from 1980-1991. He had boundless enthusiasm for life and Massachusetts politics as a campaign manager and candidate. He loved vacations on Cape Cod, where he moved his family in 1971. John and Elizabeth made their home Virginia Beach in 2000 to enjoy his son's family and 2 grandchildren. There he earned his 50 year Mason pin.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Elizabeth, his son John and wife Barbara of Virginia Beach, and grandsons John III and Walter. John was a patriot and a patriarch, he will be missed for his life of sacrifice and loving contribution. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday 9 November, at Great Neck Baptist Church on 1020 General Jackson Drive, Virginia Beach. Burial will be at a later date in Hamilton, Massachusetts.
