Virginia Beach - Our beloved Leonides Sawyer or Leo as she was affectionately called, left this earth on Saturday, June 15th, 2013, at the age of ninety two, to join our heavenly father and her beloved husband, Calvin Sawyer or Buddy, as he was known to everyone. She was also predeceased in death, by her mother, Micaela Valdes Fernandez, her father, Antonio Fernandez, both of Cuba, four brothers and one sister, also of Cuba.
Leo is survived by a brother, Jose Fernandez of Cuba, a brother, Lupine Fernandez of Puerto Rico, two sisters, Elvia Riera, her primary caregiver, and a sister, Delia Alvarez of Fairfax, Virginia, and several nieces and nephews. She is also survived by a sister-in-law, Sylvia Moncreef, her husband, Frank, and family of Virginia Beach, Virginia, and the many friends who have loved and admired her over the years.
Leo was born in Cuba and became a clothing designer and tailor there. She moved to the states in 1960, meeting Buddy shortly after. Marriage followed and Leo and Buddy settled in the Virginia Beach area. Leo owned her own boutique, called "La Moda,"for a period of time, then later worked for Thalhimer's and still later Proffit's and Lord and Taylor's before retiring. Throughout their nearly fifty years together, Leo and Buddy were devoted to each other, their church, Saint Nicholas Catholic Church, and their many friends and family. As Buddy has been missed, so will our dear, dear Leo, who was a beautiful person in every way. God bless you Leo and take you home. We'll be at a loss without you. We love you.
A Memorial Mass will be held at Saint Nicholas Catholic Church on Wednesday, July 17th, 2013, at 11 a.m. Address is: 712 Little Neck Road, Virginia Beach, Virginia. Father Cristiano Brito will be the celebrant and the family requests that In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the National Heart Research Foundation.
