Martin Boytek

Portsmouth - Died Mar. 20, 2014. He was a coal miner's son, a 1967 graduate of Logan High School, attended Marshall Univ. & received a B.S. in physical therapy from MCV/VCU in 1972. Following 3 yrs. of active duty in the Medical Service Corps of the U.S.Navy, he served in the Navy Reserves for 17 yrs., retiring with the rank of Commander. He had recently retired from Churchland Physical Therapy Services, which he founded in 1983. He was a charter member of Emmaus Baptist Church & led its youth group during the 1980's. His longtime involvement with Boy Scouts of America included serving as Scoutmaster of Troop 216. During the 1993 Mississippi River floods, Marty organized the community's "Operation Sandbag" & led 15 Boy Scouts to St. Louis where they volunteered with the Red Cross. He enjoyed sailing Hobie catamarans & was proud of having sailed in the Worrell 1000. Marty touched many lives through his community involvement, physical therapy practice, enthusiasm & easy smile. He is survived by sons Joshua & Patrick, sister Linda L. Farmer, brother Bobby, and numerous nieces and nephews. A gathering to celebrate Marty's life will be held at Dennis' Spaghetti & Steak House 3356 Western Branch Blvd. Ches.VA 5-7pm on Wed. Mar.26 In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Boy Scouts of America. Remembrances may be made online @
