Mary S. Moreno(1973 - 2014)

Mary S. Moreno

Chesapeake - Mary Susan (Ostroski) Moreno, age 40, passed away peacefully on Palm Sunday, April 13, 2014, surrounded by her loving and dedicated husband, family, and friends.

Mary was born in Wausau, WI, on August 17, 1973, to George and Joan Ostroski. She was the youngest of their five children, and was the sparkle of the family.

She attended elementary school at St. Therese Catholic School and graduated in 1992 from D.C. Everest High School in Schofield, WI. She earned her B.A. degree in Zoology and Conservation from U. Wis.-Madison, where she met her future husband, Mark. Mary and Mark were wed on August 2, 1997 in Madison, WI. Mary became a dutiful military wife, moving around the country from naval base to naval base, lovingly creating home sweet homes for her family at each new location. She found comfort and solace at their country home in Chesapeake, which she named The Healing Place, where she could be surrounded by her human family and animal friends.

A self-proclaimed introvert, Mary was a humble person who did not like the lime-light, but she drew everyone to herself by her warmth, personality, and sense of humor. She was a talented artist, animal lover, animal trainer, and ecologist. She was a good listener and never turned anyone away. She enjoyed history, traveling, site-seeing, art fairs, camping, and riding her horse, Starbuck. She welcomed family and friends to experience all the different areas of the country where she and her family had moved, especially her parents George and Joan. That she was game to explore and go on adventures made her the most fun travel partner. She was a devoted wife and mother and it was her heart's desire to continue to raise her children, but surrendered herself to God's will. Mary is loved and admired for her dedication to her family, strength of faith which sustained her, positive attitude, and courage and determination to beat the cancer that eventually took her from us too soon.

Mary will be deeply missed by her husband of 16 years, Mark Moreno, five children Samuel, Jack, Kirsten, Nathan, and Julia Moreno, her parents, two brothers Jeff (Sharon) Ostroski, De Pere, WI, Gregory (Angela) Ostroski, Saline, MI, two sisters, Karen Lonsdorf, Madison, WI, and Julie (Max) Dassler, Shawano, WI, and many nieces and nephews.

Mary was preceded in death by her grandparents, Basil and Rose Ostroski, and Casimir and Tillie Stralkowski, and her mother-in-law Barbara Moreno, and sister-in-law Kyle Young.

The family would especially like to thank the members of Chesapeake Community of Hope and the staff of the Integrative Longevity Institute of Virginia for their continued support and concern for the family throughout Mary's illness. In lieu of flowers, donations to the CCOH Capital Campaign and The Mary Fund of ILIV would be appreciated.
