Norwood Cecil Claiborne, Jr.
Chesapeake - Norwood Cecil Claiborne, Jr., 87, of Vellines Ave., died Jan. 4, 2013, in a local hospital.
He was born in Martinsville, VA and was the son of the late Norwood C. Claiborne, Sr. and Erma Hairston Claiborne. Norwood retired from the US Postal Service after 25 years of service as a letter carrier and was a US Army veteran serving from 1944-1946. He was a member of Virginia Korean United Methodist Church and the Southside Civic League.
Norwood is survived by his wife of 28 years, Charlotte Claiborne; a daughter, Charlene Brickhouse and husband Robert of Suffolk; a grandson, Robbie Brickhouse; 2 sisters, Margie Pope of New York and Glenice Davis and husband Bill of Washington D.C.; 2 sisters-in-law, Rebecca Spruill and Betty Manning and husband Lewis; 2 brothers-in-law, Jack Small and Carroll Small and wife Rita; and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends. He was predeceased by brothers, Bernard "Bud" Claiborne and David "Cop" Claiborne.
A service will be held at 8 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2013, at Virginia Korean United Methodist Church, 5701 Lee Farm Ln., Suffolk. Rev. Edward Wright and Rev. Lisa Meyers officiating. Burial will be in Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Indian River Chapel Tuesday from 5 to 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Virginia Korean United Methodist Church.
