Virginia Beach - Rear Admiral Paul E. Farrell, DC, USN died Oct 19, 2012 in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Born Nov 15, 1926 in Upper Darby, Pennsylvania, he was the second youngest of eight children born to James P. Farrell and Edith M. Kerk. Admiral Farrell attended West Catholic High School and LaSalle University in Philadelphia. During WWII, he was a Navy Hospital Corpsman, and following the war, served aboard USS Fargo. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania School of Dentistry in 1951, and served in the U.S. Navy Dental Corps until his retirement in 1980. His Navy assignments included Oakland CA, San Diego CA , Bethesda MD, Key West FL aboard the USS Gilmore, US Naval Academy, Port Lyautey Morocco, Norfolk VA, and Washington DC. During the Vietnam War, he was senior dentist aboard the battleship USS New Jersey. In 1976, he was promoted to flag rank, and served as Inspector General and as Chief of Dental Corps and Assistant Chief, Bureau of Medicine and Surgery. After his retirement from the Navy, he was a Professor of Dentistry at Temple University in Philadelphia. His wife Romayne Farrell, a former Navy Nurse, died in 1993. He is survived by his daughter Anne Marie Gersch (William Martin) of Richmond VA and his son Captain Paul Farrell, Jr, MC, USN (Eleanor) of Collegeville, PA, and three grandchildren, Megan Gersch, Karen Farrell, and Joseph Gersch. A funeral service will be held at Fort Myer Chapel at Arlington National Cemetery on January 29, 2013 at 12:45PM, followed by burial with honors. In lieu of flowers, the family has suggested a donation be made to the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society, 875 North Randolph Street, suite 225, Arlington, VA 22203.
