Virginia Beach - Known to most as "Schoonie," Rick left this world November 1, 2012, at the age of 57. He was a graduate of Florida State University where he received a B.S. in Criminology and was a Brother of Phi Delta Pheta. After graduation he joined the Va. Beach Police Dept. where he proudly served in several capacities as sergeant from 1978-1999. Rick then transitioned to the Va. Beach Sheriff's Dept. where he served and retired as Chief Deputy from 1999-2006. After retirement Rick resided in The Villages in Lady Lake, FL with his best friend and wife of 32 years, Connie. An avid cyclist and runner, Rick was also passionate about giving back to the community through his involvement with the Shamrock Marathon and other events with his Va. Beach running community. He was also known to frequent the golf course and cheer on his beloved Seminoles. Rick is survived by his wife Connie, daughters Brooke, Jordan, and Brittany, son in law Greg, mother Joyce, mother in law Thelma Hughes, three brothers, and three sisters. He is predeceased by father Richard Thales Schoonover and his older sister. A celebration of life service will be held Thursday November 8th at 3 p.m. at St. John's Baptist Church-2300 Holland Road Va. Beach. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Va. Beach Police Foundation. Rick was an amazing and inspirational man who touched many lives and will be deeply missed by everyone who knew him.
