Robert F. Burrow

Robert F. Burrow
Portsmouth - Robert Frank Burrow, 90, died Tuesday, April 23, 2013 at the Churchland House in Portsmouth from Alzheimer's disease. He was born to the late Mary Ellen Weiandt Noe and Harvey C. Burrow on March 5, 1923 in Three Rivers, Michigan. Bob was a United States Marine who served a 22 year career that included multiple combat tours during World War II, the Korean and Vietnam Wars. He was truly one of "The Greatest Generation." Bob retired honorably as a Warrant Officer and the discipline, determination, courage and patriotism he honed in the Corps never left him. Bob was known for his quick wit, love of animals, his old Ford, smoking his pipe, and building just about anything. Following a brief second career at Newport News Shipbuilding, Bob fully retired to spend cherished time at home with family, traveling the world, and attending his Marine Corps squadron reunions. Through all he endured toward the end of his life, Bob was always gracious and his sense of humor never left him. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Viola Hitesman, Helen McKinzie, Agnes Clementz, and Dorothy Yoder; and his brother, Charles Burrow. He leaves his wife and best friend of nearly 61 years, Carolyn (Hunter) Burrow; daughter, Pamela (Tim) Yandle of Stafford; son William Burrow of Va. Beach; daughter, Barbara (Ted) Melton of Suffolk; daughter, Vickie (Neil) Sullivan of Spotsylvania; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; his sister, Bette Brown of Bremen, Indiana; and numerous nieces and nephews. The family would like to extend thanks to the Staffs of Medi Home Health and Hospice, Churchland House, Maryview Medical Center, and Bon Secours-Maryview Nursing Care Center for their loving care and support. Special appreciation is also extended to Tami Friend, daughter-in-law, and Toni Carrasquillo, our hospice nurse for the heartfelt compassion they selflessly offered to Bob in his final days. The family will receive friends on Friday, April 26, from 6-8 p.m. at Snellings Funeral Home, 5815 High Street West, Portsmouth. A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday at 4 p.m. at the funeral home with Pastor Mark Kent officiating. Burial will be held at Quantico National Cemetery on Tuesday, April 30 at 2 p.m. with full military honors. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Bob's honor to the or Marine Corps Association & Foundation. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.snellingsfuneralhome.com
