Chesapeake - Samuel R. Forster, 85, passed away on September 21, 2013 in his home surrounded by his loved ones. Sam was born in Shenectady, NY on April 26, 1928 to the late Hazel Mae Decker and Samuel Ross Forster, Sr.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Roxann Bessel Forster. Also surviving are his son S. Ross Forster of Virginia Beach, VA; daughter Suzanne Forster Sackel and his two grandchildren, Kathryn "Katie" Sackel and Jonathan "Johnny" Sackel, all of Chesapeake, VA; sister, Virginia Rae Forster of Schenectady, NY,; sister-in-law, Marlene Gossett; nephews, Jeff Jones, Steven Jones (Laurie) and David Jones (Janice) all of Virginia Beach, several cousins and a host of friends in Florida, Hampton Roads and the Capital District area of New York State.
Sam graduated in 1946 from Mont Pleasant High School in Schenectady, NY and then attended Syracuse University. He was a graduate of the General Electric Apprentice Course then went to work for the G.E. Company for 40 years, retiring in 1988. Many of those 40 years were spent at the Knolls Atomic Power Lab. Sam was a veteran of the Korean Conflict and was a paratrooper assigned to the 187th Airborne Regimental Combat Team.
Sam was an avid golfer but due to ill health, wasn't able to enjoy the company of this golfing buddies at Honey Bee Golf Course for the past 2 ½ years. He was also proud of his "Hole-In-One" at the Stadium Golf Course in 1989.
A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. on Saturday, September 28, at Hollomon Brown Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel, 1485 Kempsville Road, Virginia Beach, VA 23464 with the Pastor Richard Goeres officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will be at Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery at a later date.
The family would like to extend their appreciation to everyone at All Heart Hospice. A special thank you goes to Joycelyn Coffee, Bill Winter, and Lillian Bass for their kindness, compassion and care during Sam's illness. We would like to thank the staff at Autumn Care of Chesapeake for the care they gave Sam.
