Spurgeon L. Ward, Jr.
Virginia Beach - Spurgeon L. Ward, Jr., 73, took his last journey on July 14, 2014 and is finally at rest. He left us with the memory of his love for life.
S.L. was the son of Spurgeon and Mildred Ward who owned a family bakery on 35th and Colonial Ave. in Norfolk, VA. S.L. graduated from Princess Anne High School in 1959 and joined the Norfolk Police Dept. He loved his job and told many stories of that era. S.L. was a local businessman opening Wards Coffee Shop across from ODU which he operated for 26 years. He was food and beverage director of concessions for Met Park Tidewater Tides. S.L. worked for Realty Executives and eventually opened his own Commercial Real Estate business, S.L. Ward and Associates. He helped many people become entrepreneurs. He proudly served his country in the US Marine Corps
. Spurgeon was a 32 degree Mason at Ruth Lodge #89, at the age of 26. He was also a member of the Shrine and Scottish Rite.
He is survived by his wife, Kathie Ward; his two sons, James Ward and wife Lisa and John Ward and wife Karen: his step-daughter, April Delaney; three grandchildren, Chris, Tim and John; his cousin Jerry Whitehurst and wife Millie; dear friends, Richard Green, David Smith, and Bill Clark.
Thanks to Tanya Petty, his nurse; Mike at Medicap Pharmacy; his team of doctors, Dr. Wong, Dr. McCune and all the helpful employees of Shore Dr. Kroger. A special regard to our friend Patricia Hawley and all our neighbors at Victoria Place for their love and support.
His loving family and his dog Mr. Lincoln, hope all will join in a homecoming service to honor his life on Saturday, July 26, 2014 from 2:00 to 4:00pm at 4629 Shore Dr. Victoria Place, Virginia Beach, VA. Condolences may be shared with the family at www.altmeyer.com
