Virginia Beach - Captain Thomas J. Mulligan, 86, passed away peacefully on September 15, 2013. He was predeceased by his parents, Thomas L. Mulligan and Mary Frances Mulligan, as well as his brothers Robert and Richard Mulligan. Tom is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Patricia Teasley Mulligan, his sister Mary Lou Gavel and brother-in-law Edward Gavel of Wyomissing, PA, sister-in-law Ginger Mulligan of Red Bank, NJ, daughter Carolyn Mulligan Moon of Danville, VA, son Stephen Mulligan and his wife Pamela James Mulligan of Midlothian, VA, and his three grandchildren, Sierra Moon, Thomas Peyton Mulligan, and Eleanor Mulligan.
Tom was born on November 21, 1926 in Brooklyn, NY and grew up in Upper Manhattan. He graduated from Fordham Prep High School in 1944. He entered the Navy's V-12 Officers Candidate program at Holy Cross College in Worcester, MA and later received his appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy where he graduated in 1950. Tom served 32 years active duty in a variety of roles related to Navy supply and logistics. He served in the Headquarters of the U.S. European Command (EUCOM) in Paris, France, worked as Director of Purchase at the Navy Supply Center in Norfolk, VA, and was appointed Commander of the Defense Contract Administration (DCASR) in Boston. MA. He later worked for Tracor, Inc. as a defense contract specialist until his retirement in 1991.
Tom led an active life in retirement. He volunteered as a Tuesday docent at the Mariner's Museum in Newport News for 15 years. He was active in the Russell House Retirement Home in Virginia Beach, serving as President of the Board of Directors for four terms. He helped to establish the Bayside Chapter of AARP and functioned as Chapter President for 4 years. He also served as an usher at the Little Creek Amphibious Base Chapel for 25 years. He was an avid model train enthusiast, enjoyed travel, and loved classical music.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 21, at 10 a.m. at St. Gregory The Great Catholic Church, 5345 Virginia Beach Blvd, Virginia Beach, VA 23462, Father Paul Shaughnessy officiating. Visitation will be on Friday, September 20 at Altmeyer Funeral Home at 5792 Greenwich Rd. from 5 to 7 p.m. Interment with full military honors at Arlington Cemetery is planned for a later date.
