Virginia Beach - CDR Virgil Thomas Faulkenberry, USN (Retired) departed this world at the age of 84 at Sentara Hospice House in Virginia Beach, VA on 19 Sept 2013 with loved ones by his side. He died from Parkinson's disease and indolent lymphoma. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend to many.
He was born on 30 Sept 1928 in Ellington, MO. He was the oldest of eight children born to Paul and Lillie Faulkenberry. He graduated as the valedictorian from Ellington High School. He continued his education by earning his Bachelor of Science degree in Forestry from the University of Missouri, his Master's Degree in Human Resource Management from Golden Gate University and a Certificate of Advanced Studies from Old Dominion University.
He joined the National Guard as a forester, which guided him to his career in the United States Navy. During his 27 years of military service, CDR Faulkenberry participated in the Korean War while on the USS Missouri. He earned his aviation wings in 1952 in Pensacola, Florida. While stationed there he married Anna his bride of 60 years.
After his retirement from the U.S. Navy he mentored young adults as an N.J.R.O.T.C. Instructor at Tabb High School. He served the community by volunteering in Boy Scout/Explorers, MYF, PTA, and church activities and as a neighborhood mentor. He enjoyed gardening and sharing his love of plants with everyone.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife Anna and his 6 children, Lauralynn and husband Mike, James and wife Cyndi, Richard and wife Jennifer, Kathryn and husband Andy, Tani and husband Stan and Jennifer. Nine grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren with one on the way, his sister Paulette, his brother Billy Joe, and extended family are also left to carry on his legacy. His mother and father Lillie and Paul, brothers Ed, Paul Jr., Jimmy and his sister Winnie precede him in death.
Services: There will be a celebration of his life on Saturday 28 Sept 2013 at 2 p.m. at Thalia United Methodist Church, 4321 Virginia Beach Blvd., Virginia Beach, VA 23452. Following the service, friends may greet family at a reception in the social hall of the church. The Internment will be Monday 30 Sept 2013 at 11:00 a.m., with full military honors at the Albert Horton Memorial Veteran's Cemetery, 5310 Milners Road, Suffolk, VA 23434.
