Norfolk - On Monday evening April 1, 2013 God called his angels to bring home one of his children Joanne "Joan" E. Shields Hathaway. Joan was born on March 10, 1945 to the late Christopher and Edna J. Shields in Norfolk, VA. In addition she was also predeceased by two brothers, Anderson and Gerald Shields; four sisters, Juanita Weathers, Elsie Stafford, Jean Freeman and Burnette Shields Upshur. She was educated in the Norfolk Public School System. Joan was a homemaker and a former member of Mt. Carmel Baptist Church. She leaves to cherish her memories, a loving husband of 20 years, Clifton Hathaway, Sr.; daughters, Alicinda Shields (Herbert), Felicia Brown (Kevin), Darlene Hathaway Skinner (Shelton), Sonia Hathaway (Oman), Joyce Jordan, Linda Bagley, Theresa Hankins, Ziporo Perry, Shashina Perry, Felisia Perry and Cordelia Perry all of Norfolk, VA; sons, Gary Shields (Wanda), Lamont Spratley, Clifton Hathaway Jr., Tabu Perry and Adonis Perry; sisters, Loretta Spain C. Murray of Boston, MA, Shirley Harris and Maxine Worrell; brothers-in-law, Artis Hathaway, Larry Freeman of Chesapeake, VA, Lawrence Riddick of Norfolk, VA and Wilbert Upsher Sr; Godchild, Joanne Thomas (Lil Jo) of Norfolk, VA; special grandchild, Lateaseau Brothers Hathaway of Norfolk, VA and a host of other relatives and friends.
A funeral service will be held, 2 p.m., Saturday, April 6, at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church, 1100 Church St. Norfolk, VA. Interment will be held at Roosevelt Memorial Park, Chesapeake, VA. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.metropolitanfuneralservice.com
